Tom BeckAug 11, 2016

Hyejin Chang of South Korea has won the gold medal in the women's individual archery at the 2016 Summer Olympics after beating Germany's Lisa Unruh 6-2 in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

The second seed was superior throughout the contest, firing three 10s on her way to victory with an imperiously consistent showing.

In the bronze-medal match, South Korea's Bobae Ki beat Alejandra Valencia of Mexico 6-4 after a nail-biting fifth-set decider.

Recap

No. 21 seed Unruh got off to a steady start but was unable to match her rival's score of 27, finishing the first set one point behind. But the 28-year-old Berliner hit back immediately, chalking up a 28 total after nailing a perfect 10 with her first attempt to take the second set.

Nerves were affecting both players, but Chang's score of 27 was enough to move into a 4-2 lead with two rounds remaining.

Umruh scored a nine with her first effort next, but Chang was on hand to better that once more. History replicated itself with their second attempts, with the German archer ending her tournament with a score of eight, totalling 27.

Chang needed just an eight to take the match, but her final showing was a nine as she won the fourth and final set 29-27 to win gold by a score of 6-2.

In the bronze-medal tie,ย Ki took the opening round 26-25 before Valencia squared up the match with a wonderful display to win the set 29-28. The Korean hit back with a 10 to start the third, ultimately ending the round ahead by just one point.

Ki hit a shocking three with her second attempt in the fourth set as the pressure began to build, with Valencia taking the round by 27-21 to take the match into a sudden-death fifth. Ki scored two consecutive 10s to settle any nerves before the wind picked up ahead of Valencia's effort.

With a two-point lead heading into her final attempt, Ki needed just an eight to win bronze but instead polished off a perfect round to score 30 and take the final medal spot with a 6-4 victory.

Unruh downed Valencia 6-2 in the first semi-final after bursting into a two-round lead with scores of 27-26 and 28-26. The Mexico archer returned with a low-scoring 25-23 round to start her fight-back, but her attempts were ultimately to no avail.

Her German opponent, fully focused and looking in strong form in the lead-up to the contest, rounded out the match with a 27-26 fourth round to take an unassailable lead with some accurate firing.

In the second semi-final contest, it was a duel between the South Korea pairing of Ki and Chang. Defending Olympic champion Ki looked the stronger of the two Asian competitors heading into their final-four clash, with passing winds of over four metres per second soon to play their part.ย

The first round was a low-quality affair, as Chang astonishingly made a total of just 19 from her three arrows after scoring a wayward three with her second attempt. After losing the first round 25-19 and laughing off her sloppy earlier error, the 29-year-old team captain bravely fought back to take the next two rounds at 27-24 each.ย

After sharing the fourth round at 26-26, the 2015 Asian Games gold medalist hit her fourth 10 of the match to take the finale 28-26 and progress to the tournament showdown, where she would ultimately become an Olympic champion.
