Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Latest Reaction and Standings for Thursday Results

Rory MarsdenAug 11, 2016

Great Britain enjoyed their best day of Rio 2016 so far on Wednesday as they picked up two gold medals and four bronze to move into the top 10 in the medal standings.

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears won Britain's first-ever Olympic diving title after Joe Clarke triumphed in the kayak K1 event, while cyclist Chris Froome, gymnast Max Whitlock, judoka Sally Conway and trap shooter Steven Scott claimed bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the United States remained top of the medal table as they picked up two more golds—Kristin Armstrong won a third consecutive title in the women's time trial and the women's 4x200-metre freestyle team triumphed—and were matched by China, who prevailed in the women's singles table tennis and women's 69kg weightlifting.

Here's how things stand heading into the sixth day of action in Brazil, with more medals up for grabs in archery, gymnastics, canoe slalom, track cycling, fencing, judo, rowing, rugby sevens, shooting, swimming and table tennis on Thursday:

Laugher and Mears held off strong competition to win a surprise gold, producing a string of excellent dives to finish with a total of 454.32, four up on the U.S. duo and 11 ahead of the Chinese pair.

Mears had life-saving surgery in 2009 after rupturing his spleen while diving, and he spoke in disbelief after his and Laugher's triumph, per Press Association Sport (via BT Sport): "I still can't really believe that it's happened. I've come from death's door to here. I'm pretty proud."

Clarke's gold was also a slight surprise as he came up with a blistering run at just the right time.

He qualified third fastest for the final with a time of 90.67 seconds and shaved almost two seconds off that mark in the race for gold, posting 88.53.

Neither of the final two paddlers could better the 23-year-old's time, and thus Clarke was crowned champion for Team GB's second gold of the Games.

While Whitlock did not claim gold, he did end a 108-year medal drought for Great Britain by taking bronze in the men's all-around, per Sportingintelligence.com's Nick Harris:

In a fascinating final, Japan's Kohei Uchimura successfully defended his title from London 2012 after edging Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev into silver on the very last rotation with a spectacular routine on the high bar, per USA Today's Nick McCarvel:

Thursday will see the women's individual all-around final take place with Simone Biles expected to add a second gold to her Rio 2016 haul after the USA dominated the field in the women's team event.

That will edge her closer to Katie Ledecky's return in Brazil, which now stands at three golds and a silver after the 19-year-old anchored the U.S. team to victory in the 4x200-metre freestyle on Wednesday.

Team USA's other gold of the day came after a stunning time trial from Armstrong on the eve of her 43rd birthday on Thursday, per NBC Olympics:

The track cycling in the Rio Velodrome begins in earnest on Thursday with Britain looking to dominate proceedings once again after they won seven gold medals at both London 2012 and Beijing 2008.

Meanwhile, the rowing finals get under way after weather forced a postponement on Wednesday, and Michael Phelps will go for a 22nd Olympic gold medal in the men's 200-metre individual medley up against fellow American Ryan Lochte.
