At 200 meters, this race consisted of four laps of 50 meters where the swimmers involved faced down toward the water and simultaneously moved their arms in a circular motion while executing a butterfly kick.
There was a good chance this race would give three swimmers their first medals of the game, as Belmonte Garcia was the only woman in the field of eight who had already won a medal in Rio, which was a bronze in the women's 400-meter individual medley.
Groves was quickest off the block and created a healthy lead of almost a second after 50 meters. At the 100-meter mark, it shrunk to just 0.46 seconds in front of Belmonte Garcia.
By the 150-meter mark, Belmonte Garcia took the lead by 0.14 seconds, but Groves didn't fade and stayed with her for the final stretch.

Two Americans participated in the race, but neither of them was able to get to the podium.
Hali Flickinger finished in seventh, but Cammile Adams just missed the bronze medal, as her time was less than a second slower than Japan's Natsumi Hoshi.
