Olympic Swimming 2016: Men's 200M Breaststroke Medal Winners, Times and Results

Alec NathanAug 10, 2016

The field at the men's 200-meter breaststroke final was positively loaded, and Kazakhstan's Dmitriy Balandin separated himself from a stellar group with a late push to win the gold medal in two minutes, 7.46 seconds over USA's Josh Prenot and Anton Chupkov of Russia.

Balandin's triumph represented a major upset, as a pair of Japanese swimmers in Ippei Watanabe and Yasuhiro Koseki were expected to compete alongside Prenot and fellow American Kevin Cordes for places on the podium.

According to Sporting News' Joe RodgersBalandin's gold medal was the first piece of hardware ever awarded to a swimmer from Kazakhstan.

Here's a rundown of the official results order and times from Wednesday's final:

1Dmitriy Balandin (KAZ)2:07.46
2Josh Prenot (USA)2:07.53
3Anton Chupkov (RUS)2:07.70
4Andrew Willis (GBR)2:07.78
5Yasuhiro Koseki (JPN)2:07.80
6Ippei Watanabe (JPN)2:07.87
7Marco Koch (GER)2:08.00
8Kevin Cordes (USA)2:08.34

And with the men's 200-meter breaststroke in the bag, here's a look at the updated medal count as Day 6 of Olympic competition approaches:

Wednesday's final was expected to be a tightly contested affair based on recent results in the World Championships, Olympic preliminaries and Olympic semifinals, and that didn't change Wednesday as Balandin just barely edged out a packed field.

Watanabe entered the 200-meter breaststroke with plenty of momentum after he touched the wall in a new Olympic record of 2:07.22 in the semifinals, and he was seeking to thrust Japan back onto the podium's top spot after his fellow countryman Kosuke Kitajima nabbed gold in Athens and Beijing.

Koseki, on the other hand, was on pace to take home a medal through 50 meters when he made the turn in what amounted to a world-record split of 29 seconds, per SwimSwam on Twitter. However, he couldn't sustain that gaudy clip over the ensuing 150 meters and find a way into illustrious territory.

Prenot and Cordes, meanwhile, attempted to give the Red, White and Blue a boost in an event that it hadn't experienced much success in since Mike Barrowman captured gold in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympics. In the five men's 200-meter breaststroke finals that have occurred on the Olympic stage since then, the U.S. medaled just once (Brendan Hansen, bronze, 2004).

But thanks to Prenot's surge, the Americans were able to snap their 12-year drought and return to the podium as the first-time Olympian hung on while a talented group pursued glory just behind him.

The other big storyline revolved around German Marco Koch, who captured gold at the men's 200-meter breaststroke at the 2015 World Championships in Russia.

Koch couldn't quite capture the same magic, though, and he plummeted to seventh, while Cordes brought up the rear in eighth.

The 26-year-old came up empty at the 2012 Olympics in London, too, so he will undeniably be motivated to try to wipe away the memories of failures past as his career progresses once the festivities in Rio end.

Post-Race Reaction

"It is the first Olympic swimming medal for Kazakhstan and is the biggest honour I can give," Balandin said, per the Olympic News Service on Twitter.

"I think the whole of Kazakhstan will be drinking tonight," Balandin added of the historic win, according to the Olympic News Service

Elsewhere, Prenot expressed minor disappointment that he wasn't able to take home gold following a dynamic push in the latter stages of the race.

"I would have liked to have come home stronger," Prenot said of his race, per the Olympic News Service. "I started my sprint earlier than I do normally."
