Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Latest Reaction and Standings for Wednesday Results

Rory MarsdenAug 10, 2016

The United States edged ahead at the top of the medal table following Tuesday's action as they picked up four more golds to China's three.

The U.S. women put on a stunning performance to prevail in their team gymnastics final, Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky both won again in the pool and there was another gold for the Americans in the men's 4x200-metre freestyle relay.

China's women matched the gold medal the men's pair won in the 10-metre synchronised diving and added two more in weightlifting, while Team Great Britain picked up two silvers in the pool after another day of near misses elsewhere.

Here are how things stand heading into the fifth day of action, with more medals up for grabs in gymnastics, canoe slalom, road cycling, diving, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and rowing on Wednesday:

As expected, Team USA romped home in the women's team gymnastics final, with Russia taking the silver and China the bronze, per the New York Times:

Laurie Hernandez, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian were all phenomenal, but it was the incomparable Simone Biles who led the way as she claimed the first of a potentially record-breaking five gold medals at Rio 2016.

The 19-year-old, competing in her first Olympics, rounded off the victory with a brilliant performance on the floor, per NBC Olympics:

Biles is tipped to prevail in the individual all-around final, as well as on the floor, the beam and the vault, but her first Olympic gold was clearly special:

Phelps, 31, collected his 20th and 21st career gold medals in the Olympics on Tuesday as he avenged his defeat to Chad le Clos in London 2012 by winning the 200 butterfly, before anchoring the USA home in style in the 4x200 freestyle relay.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Ledecky completed the second part of a potential treble in the freestyle events as she added 200 gold to the 400 title she took earlier in the week.

Team GB had success in the pool as Siobhan-Marie O'Connor claimed an excellent silver in the 200-metre individual medley, pushing Hungarian world champion Katinka Hosszu all the way to the line, per BBC Sport's Dan Walker:

Meanwhile, James Guy produced an excellent final leg in the 200 freestyle relay for Great Britain to pass Japan and take the silver medal.

There was disappointment, though, for the GB women's diving duo of Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson as they could only manage fifth in the 10-metre synchronised dive, with Chinese pair Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia winning by a distance.

There was controversy and much bemusement by the odd green colour of the water at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, per British diver Tom Daley:

Shocks were also prevalent on the fourth day of action as American world No. 1 Serena Williams was dumped out of the women's tennis by 20th-ranked Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, while Japan beat New Zealand in the men's rugby sevens tournament.

Wednesday sees more action in the gymnastics as the men’s individual all-around final takes place—Japan's Kohei Uchimura is the hot favourite—and three-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome goes for gold in the men’s time-trial.

The medals keep coming thick and fast in the pool also with finals set to take place in the men's 200 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, and the women's 200 butterfly and 4x200 freestyle relay.
