Joe PantornoAug 9, 2016

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu collected her third gold medal of the 2016 Olympic Games from Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday with a victory in the women's 200-meter individual medley.

Her time of two minutes, 6.58 seconds was 0.3 seconds quicker than that of silver medalist Siobhan-Marie O'Connor from Great Britain in an event that required its racers to execute the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle for one lap each.

Here are the medalists and their times:

This was an event that was widely regarded as a three-swimmer race between Hosszu, O'Connor and American Madeline Dirado.

These were the top three qualifiers and the only swimmers to post times under 2:09 during the semifinals.

O'Connor was one of the favorites after she put up a time of 2:07.57, which was more than half a second better than Hosszu's. But Hosszu had been one of the most unstoppable swimmers in Rio, winning a pair of golds with the 100-meter backstroke and the 400-meter individual medley in which she obliterated the world record.

Dirado, who is competing in her first and only Olympics at age 23, has been swimming her best at the right time, including a silver-medal performance in the 400-meter individual medley behind Hosszu.

It was Hosszu who took the lead after the first 50 meters, which came in the form of the butterfly, and never looked back. Her advantage swelled to 0.72 seconds over O'Connor after the 100-meter mark following the backstroke.

The Englishwoman's deficit grew even more on the breaststroke, but she mounted a charge on the freestyle. While she gained almost half a second, it wasn't enough as Hosszu closed things out to win her third gold of the Rio Games.

Dirado was able to take bronze for her second medal of the Olympics, but she was more than two seconds off Hosszu's pace.
