Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Latest Nation Rankings and Standings for Tuesday
The women's gymnastics team competition might be the most notable battle taking place Tuesday, but there are a number of medals set to be handed out throughout Day 4 of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
France got off to a strong start on the day with its first two gold medals in equestrian and kayak. Meanwhile, the United States earned a few more medals to extend its overall lead that could get even bigger by the end of the night.
Although eventing isn't the most popular sport for American audiences who don't know what they are watching, France knew exactly what was going on with an impressive showing in the team competition, finishing just ahead of Germany and Australia for second and third place.
On the other hand, the individual competition was slightly different as German rider Michael Jung took gold while France's Astier Nicholas finished with a silver. American Phillip Dutton ended up with the bronze.
France kept the ball rolling in kayak when Denis Gargaud Chanut won a gold medal in the individual whitewater competition, narrowly beating out Slovakia's Matej Benus for first place.

While the French hadn't gotten off to the best start over the weekend in Rio de Janeiro, they showed they could still bring in some medals.
China was able to actually take the lead for the most golds in the Olympics with yet another victory in synchronized diving, which has become a near lock for the country. This time it was Chen Ruolin and Huixia Liu winning the women's 10-meter dive.
The country earned another gold medal in weightlifting when Deng Wei finished first in the 63-kilogram weight class.
However, the United States has a chance to make up ground in the women's gymnastics team competition. Everyone knows this squad is favored, but Nancy Armour of USA Today goes even further with her projection:
With Simone Biles projected to easily win the women's all-around individual gold, and veterans Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas also among the top in the world, this is truly the best team in the competition.
Even the opponents think this way heading into the team finals.
"It's going to be really difficult to compete against the American team," Russian star Aliya Mustafina said after the qualifying session, per Will Graves of the Associated Press. "They are unbeatable at the moment."
Nothing is guaranteed at this level, but it would be a major surprise if the United States doesn't take gold.
Meanwhile, Team USA has a chance to add a few more medals later in the night in the swimming finals when Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps each try to win their second gold medals of this Olympics. Phelps will be competing in his first individual final in Rio, although he already has 19 golds in his career.
Judo, fencing and shooting will also hand out medals before the day is done.
