Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Latest Reaction and Standings for Tuesday Results
Equestrian got things underway in terms of medal events at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Tuesday. France secured gold by winning the eventing team jumping final ahead of Germany and Australia, who settled for silver and bronze, respectively, according to BBC Sport.
Later, Germany's Michael Jung took gold in the singles event as expected. Meanwhile, there was bronze for a member of Team USA, according to NBC Olympics:
The men's canoe single slalom was another event to keep a close eye on. Some big names were missing, according to Eric Scatamacchia of NBC Olympics, including "three-time Olympic canoe single slalom gold medalist Tony Estanguet," as well as "2012 London bronze medalist Michal Martikan."
The presumably weakened field made the semi-final and final, held at the Whitewater Stadium, naturally tougher to predict. It was Frenchman Denis Gargaud Chanut who took the gold, ahead of Slovakia's Matej Benus.

There are also prizes set to be handed out in the judo, fencing, shooting, gymnastics and weightlifting later in the day.
The women's artistic gymnastics final stands out among those events, specifically Team USA's attempts to win gold. A medal has been collected by this nation in this event for the last six Olympic games, per Jonathan Powell of the competition's official site.
Here's what the medal count looks like for each country with most of Tuesday's big events still to play out:
There's a suitably heavyweight feel to the level of competition and talent on show in the men's -81-kilogram judo event. Specifically, the field contains many former champions of various distinction.
In particular, American judoka Travis Stevens and Georgia's Avtandil Tchrikishvili, a former world champion, have to be considered the favourites for the top two medals.
Yet this event has already produced its share of surprises recently, most notably when unseeded Italian judoka Fabio Basile claimed gold in the men's -66 kilogram.

It's an equally crowded field of potential gold winners for the men's individual epee in fencing. A lot of attention will surely be paid to 41-year-old Geza Imre of Hungary, the "oldest fencer to win a world title," per Eric Weeks of NBC Olympics.
