Appeals Court Rejects Legalization of Sports Betting at NJ Casinos, Racetracks
New Jersey's latest effort to legalize sports betting hit a wall Tuesday, as it was rejected by a federal appeals court. According to the Associated Press, betting on sports at casinos and racetracks will still not be permitted in the state.
New Jersey initially passed a law in 2014 that would have legalized sports betting in casinos and racetracks, joining Nevada and Delaware as the only states with some form of legal wagering on sports.
The NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and NCAA sued the state, however, and it was determined that legalized sports betting would have violated a federal law.
However, the NHL recently awarded an expansion team to Las Vegas, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been a public proponent of legalizing sports betting.
New Jersey's gambling hub, Atlantic City, is on the decline financially, and the legalization of sports betting at its casinos would have provided a boost.
