Recap
Colombia's Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano took the lead with just three lifters remaining in the snatch, with a personal best of 155 kilograms.
He was soon to be bettered however, as Shi and Ismayilov began their tilt at the title in impressive fashion, lifting 156 kilograms in their opening gambit into the competition.

The People's Republic of Korea's Myong Hyok Kim briefly moved to the top of the standings with a 157-kilogram snatch, before Shi recorded a personal best of 160 kilograms. Ismayilov then moved level with the Chinese lifter—also a PB for the Turk.
Shi expected to move into the clean and jerk after successfully sealing a 152kg lift but Ismayilov was not to be deterred, as he improved on his best with a 163-kilogram snatch.
The Turkish lifter took a one-kilogram lead into the second stage of the competition but did not look as comfortable with the jerk. Albania's Briken Calja temporarily moved into fourth with a personal best 181-kilogram lift after his second attempt, level with Mexico's Brendi Roque Mendoza but behind due to bodyweight.
Shi leapfrogged his way to the top of the standings with an impressive squat jerk of 193 kilograms, standing proudly with locked elbows. Kim missed with his first attempt at 188kgs and was unable to complete his jerk at the same weight with his second try.

Ismayilov's third attempt of 188 kilograms was three kilograms more than his previous successful attempt and moved him 1kg clear of Shi at the summit. Following some gamesmanship between the Colombian and the North Korean coaches, Shi was forced to return to the platform to nail a 190-kilogram clean and jerk in devastating fashion.
Artykov attempted an Olympic record of 196 kilograms—8kgs higher than his previous best in the final—but failed to finish the lift, with Kim doing the same.

In the final lift of the event, Shi was moments away from lifting an Olympic record of 198 kilograms but his failure didn't matter, as he took home gold with a combined total of 352. Ismayilov finished just 1kg behind with a silver medal, with Artykov rounding out the podium places on 339.
Deng Powers To Glory
In the women's, Deng began her pursuit of gold by stamping an initial snatch of 108 kilograms to move to the summit of the leaderboard early on in the Group A competition.
That table-topping effort would soon be bettered by rival Goricheva, who moved into first place with a snatch of 111 kilograms.
But Deng would soon leapfrog her closest challenger with a lift of 112kgs in her second attempt before tying a personal best with her final try of the day, extending her lead with a snatch of 115 kilograms.

Heading into the Games, the Chinese lifter held the world record with a 146-kilogram clean and jerk, meaning her rivals had some ground to make up in the second stage of the competition.
In the clean and jerk, Deng arrived in the contest with a four-kilogram advantage and sat on from the sidelines to see her competitors' attempts.
Goricheva's first attempt at 132kg was a success, despite one of the judge flashing her a red light, as she moved into the lead in the competition.
Having been sat in third place following the snatch, Thailand's Siripuch Gulnoi failed to complete her 132-kilogram lift in three consecutive attempts, opening up the medal places as she exited the competition.

Goricheva was desperate to signal her intentions in the tournament with an Olympic record attempt of 137kg, which she failed to complete. Colombia's Mercedes Perez also attempted that figure but was unable to lift past her chest and departed with a haul of 134 kilograms. Goricheva followed her back on to the platform but again couldn't execute the move.
In Deng's first attempt, the 23-year-old produced a sublime display to lift an Olympic record 138-kilogram clean-and-jerk lift to take her total to 253, also an Olympic record.

Choe matched that weight lift to move herself into silver medal spot on 243, due to the fact her bodyweight was less than that of Goricheva. Choe then stunned the crowd to break her own record and lift 143 kilograms to further cement her second-place spot.
With records tumbling, Deng lifted 147 kilograms on the clean and jerk to nail her own world record figure and total to take the gold medal. The silver went to Choe as Goricheva picked up the final podium position.
