Olympic Swimming 2016: Men's 200M Freestyle Medal Winners, Times and Results
With a surge in the final 100 meters, China's Sun Yang won gold in the men's 200-meter freestyle race Monday at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Chad le Clos opened a healthy lead during the first half of the race but faded the closer he came to the finish line. The South African narrowly edged out Conor Dwyer for silver:
| 1 | Sun Yang | China | 1:44.65 |
| 2 | Chad le Clos | South Africa | 1:45.20 |
| 3 | Conor Dwyer | United States | 1:45.23 |
| 4 | James Guy | Great Britain | 1:45.49 |
| 5 | Townley Haas | United States | 1:45.58 |
| 6 | Paul Biedermann | Germany | 1:45.84 |
| 7 | Kosuke Hagino | Japan | 1:45.90 |
| 8 | Aleksandr Krasnykh | Russia | 1:45.91 |
Sun did a great job of pacing himself right out of the starting block. He remained near the top of the field, but he didn't panic when Le Clos opened up an early advantage. Sun stuck to his strategy and waited for Le Clos to start running out of gas.
The 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 200-meter butterfly was visibly fatigued as he headed into the final 50 meters, at which point it was Sun's race to lose. Once Sun got into first place, he wasn't going to be overtaken.
While he excelled in the water at the Olympic Aquatic Stadium, Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde doesn't think a baseball career will be in Sun's future:
Le Clos dug deep to stay in second place after his medal chances looked to be fading rapidly in the final 25 meters.
For Dwyer, the bronze medal will feel somewhat underwhelming since only 0.03 seconds separated him and Le Clos. Still, he rebounded well following his fourth-place finish in the men's 400-meter freestyle Saturday.
