Olympic 2016 Results: Medal Winners, Highlights for Each Event After Monday

Steve SilvermanAug 8, 2016

It was another winning night in the pool for the American swimmers at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but the men's gymnastics team was unable to bring home a medal.

American Lilly King found a way to edge Russian rival Yulia Efimova in the 100-meter breaststroke, and Katie Meili also had a strong race as she finished third in the event.

King had the lead at the midway point of the race, but Efimova surged midway through the final 50 meters. King somehow found the extra gear to hang on and get the gold medal with an Olympic-record time of 1:04.93.

King had been critical of Efimova for using performance-enhancing drugs. “You know, you’re shaking your finger ‘No. 1’ and you’ve been caught for drug cheating, I’m just not—you know, I’m not a fan,” King said on NBC on Sunday (h/t Boston Globe).

As a result of King's straightforward criticism, the meeting between the two swimmer had a Rocky Balboa-Ivan Drago/Cold War feel to it.

The United States men's gymnastics team had high hopes going into the team final, but it was another disappointing finish.

The American men were second in the standings following the preliminary round, and they were quite confident of a finish that would see them stand proudly on the medal stand. However, that was not going to happen as the men made uncharacteristic errors in the floor exercise and that proved too much to overcome.

Alex Naddour had a tough fall in a late tumbling run, while normally dependable Sam Mikulak stepped out of bounds twice, leading to significant deductions.

The Americans steadied themselves after those errors, but they were unable to dig their way out of the hole. As a result, they finished fifth in the overall standings. That's the same finish they had in the London Games four years earlier.

“We had a better outcome in mind, but it just didn’t happen today,” Jake Dalton told reporters at the conclusion of the event (h/t Nick McCarvel of TeamUSA.org). “It’s frustrating because we put everything we could into training to be ready for this day—we had a great prelims—but it just wasn’t our day.”

Japan had no such difficulties and took the gold medal. Russian gymnasts rallied and took the silver, while defending Olympic champion China took the bronze medal.

Host Brazil had its first golden moment of the Olympics as Rafaela Silva won the women's 57-kilogram judo competition.

It marked a distinct turnaround for Silva, who had been eliminated four years ago in London because of a rules violation. Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia took the silver medal, while Telma Monteiro of Portugal and Kaori Matsumoto of Japan each took bronze medals.

The Chinese team of Lin Yue and Chen Aisen took gold in the men's synchronized 10-meter platform diving, and that was no surprise since those two were the favorites coming into the event. They overpowered the field with a score of 496.98.

The American team of David Boudia and Steele Johnson won a taut battle for the silver as they edged Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow of Great Britain. The American duo had a score of 457.11, while the British divers totaled 444.45.
