Olympic 2016 Results: Tracking Medal Count for Each Country on Monday
The United States pulled ahead in the Rio Games medal count after Day 2 thanks to some impressive swimming performances Sunday night.
China has kept it close early and has the ability to rack up medals in diving and shooting, while Italy recently brought home golds in judo and fencing. As the 2016 Summer Olympics move into full gear, this race for the medal lead is only going to get more intense.
Sunday was a big day for Italy with finals upsets for Fabio Basile in judo and Daniele Garozzo in fencing. Garozzo took on American Alex Massialas in the men's foil finals and took control early to help him bring one of three early golds for his home country.
On the other hand, there were no upsets in synchronized diving as the Chinese tandem of Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao cruised to victory with their near flawless dives. Wu has now won four consecutive gold medals in this event, an incredible show of longevity at the highest level.
Mengxue Zhang added to China's day with a gold in the air pistol while Long Qingquan also came through with a first-place finish in weightlifting.
However, the big story of the day was the United States' strength in the pool.
Katie Ledecky won her first, and probably not her last, gold of the Rio Olympics with a truly dominant showing in the 400-meter freestyle. SportsCenter provided a look at the separation between the 19-year-old American and the rest of the field:
Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated put the record-breaking win in perspective:
Later in the night, the United States took home a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay in one of the more exciting races of the day. Michael Phelps helped get out in front with a strong second leg while Nathan Adrian closed things out as the anchor.
Phelps, who earned his 19th career gold medal in the process, was extremely excited about the win, per the Baltimore Sun:
The United States also added a few bronze medals during the swimming portion between Leah Smith, Dana Vollmer and Cody Miller to help boost its standing in the overall medal count.
Of course, we are still just getting started in Rio with 16 total days of competition.
A lot of medals will be handed out Monday in Day 3 of the Summer Games, including finals in diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rugby, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.
Among the most exciting battles to follow is the men's gymnastics team competition, which features the United States, China and Japan among others all battling for gold.
There is also another night of swimming finals with medals handed out in the men's 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke along with the women's 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter breaststroke. The breaststroke might be the most exciting to watch with American Lilly King battling Yulia Efimova of Russia, who was banned and then reinstated for the games, per Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times.
These competitions and more will make Day 3 a fun one to follow for all fans.
