Recap
Campriani showcased his accuracy from the off, topping the qualification event with an Olympic record of 630.2 from his 60 shots.
Indeed, in only the first and fourth of the six series in qualifying did he score less than 105.
Maslennikov finished close behind with 629.0, while Croatia's Petar Gorsa—who would go on to struggle later in the final—came in a close third with 628.0.
The International Shooting Sport Federation revealed the final qualification standings:
An entertaining final saw Hungary's Peter Sidi take an early lead after the first stage with 61.7, but as the second stage wore on, it quickly became a battle between the Campriani, Maslennikov, Kulish and India's Abhinav Bindra.
The Indian improved as the final went on until a wayward 9.7 in his sixth shot forced him into a shootout with Kulish, which the Ukrainian subsequently won 10.5 to 10.
Kulish then shot a 10.3 to leapfrog Maslennikov, who had put himself into first place midway through the event, and consign the Russian to bronze.
The ISSF captured the scenes during the final:
Campriani and Kulish were then left to battle it out with their final two shots, and it was the former who held his nerve—with the latter needing to overcome a deficit of 0.6 in the last shot, he could only manage a 9.8.
The Italian finished the event in style, securing gold with an outstanding 10.7 points and setting an Olympic record in the process.
In the trap bronze event, Ling overcame a miss on his first shot to win comfortably. Indeed, he failed to hit the target with just one of his remaining 14 efforts, while Kostelecky missed with four of his first nine, allowing his opponent to pick up the bronze with a shot to spare.
Then followed a tense shootout between Glasnovic and Pellielo. Glasnovic was the first to miss with his sixth shot, and Pellielo missed twice immediately afterward.
The Italian was able to regain his composure and did not miss another of his first 15, meaning a Glasnovic miss on his 13th attempt led to sudden death. However, Pellielo missed his fourth shot, allowing the Croatian to coolly seal the gold.
