Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Monday Updates on Medal Standings for Each Nation
The third official day of action at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place Monday in Rio de Janeiro, with eight different sports having a chance to crown medalists.
Swimming, diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rugby, shooting and weightlifting all took center stage as pool play remained ongoing in most team sports. Rugby and gymnastics handed out their first medals, while the other six continued over from their previous weekend ceremonies.
The United States, buoyed by its excellence in swimming, led all countries with 12 medals coming into Monday's slate. Its three golds were tied with China and Australia for the most overall. China entered the day with eight total medals, with Japan and Italy boasting seven apiece.
Here is a look at how things played out after Monday, with a highlight of a few of the more prominent events:
Men's 10-Meter Air Rifle
| Gold | Niccolo Campriani (Italy) | 206.1 |
| Silver | Serhiy Kulish (Ukraine) | 204.6 |
| Bronze | Vladimir Maslennikov (Russia) | 184.2 |
West Virginia University continued its impressive shooting run thus far in Rio, as Italian Niccolo Campriani walked away with gold in the men's 10-meter air rifle event Monday. Campriani, the 2011 NCAA air rifle champion, earned a score of 206.1 to narrowly defeat Ukraine's Serhiy Kulish. Vladimir Maslennikov of Russia finished well behind the top two but earned a score of 184.2 to take bronze.
West Virginia shooters captured both air rifle events in Rio. Ginny Thrasher, a sophomore in Morgantown, earned her first Olympic gold in the women's event Saturday.
The program, which has won four straight NCAA titles, celebrated on Twitter:
Campriani now has three Olympic medals to his name, including two golds. He earned silver in the air rifle competition at the 2012 Summer Games in London.
The 28-year-old led for a majority of the competition and closed out the gold-medal performance with a 10.7 on his final shot.
The win gives Italy three gold medals and eight overall, tying it with China for second place on the medal count. Kulish's silver is the first medal of these games for Ukraine, and Maslennikov's is the sixth overall for Russia.
Men's Trap Shooting
| Gold Medal | Josip Glasnovic (Croatia) def. Giovanni Pellielo (Italy), 13-13 (sudden death) |
| Bronze Medal | Ed Lin (Great Britain) def. David Kostelecky (Czech Republic), 13-9 |
In one of the more thrilling results of the 2016 Games thus far, Croatia's Josip Glasnovic outlasted Italy's Giovanni Pellielo in a sudden death shootout to win the gold.
Glasnovic and Pellielo each advanced in their semifinals matches Monday and were locked in for the thrilling final. Both hit scores of 13 in regulation, setting them up for a shot-off where the first mistake made the difference between silver and gold.
The gold is Croatia's first medal of the 2016 Summer Games. Pellielo's silver moved Italy alone into second place on the overall medal count with nine.
In the bronze-medal match, Great Britain earned its third medal of Rio when Ed Lin defeated Czech Republic's David Kostelecky by a score of 13-9. Kostelecky struggled early and never recovered, with Lin hitting on a mark equivalent to the gold-medal performers.
Overall Picture
The United States, with 19 overall medals, is comfortably ahead in the medal race through Monday’s action thanks to more dominance in the pool.
A day after Michael Phelps and Co. captured gold in the men’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay and Katie Ledecky won the women’s 400-meter freestyle, the Americans again demonstrated their swimming prowess.
Conor Dwyer took home the bronze in the men’s 200-meter freestyle; Kathleen Baker won silver in the women’s 100-meter backstroke; Ryan Murphy captured gold in the men’s 100-meter backstroke; David Plummer won bronze in the men’s 100-meter backstroke; Lilly King won gold in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke; and Catherine Meili earned bronze in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke.
King outlasted rival Yulia Efimova of Russia in dramatic fashion, as NBC Olympics shared:
Elsewhere, second-place China was bolstered by a gold medal in the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform diving competition and a bronze in the men’s team gymnastics final. Japan (gold) and Russia (silver), which also medaled in gymnastics, are within striking distance of the Americans early in the medal race.
Perhaps the most memorable medal came in the women’s 57-kilogram judo final, where Brazil’s Rafaela Silva took home the host nation’s first gold.
NBC Olympics passed along the celebratory scene:
It will take plenty more moments like that for Brazil to make up ground on the Americans and others, but it was a lasting image at the 2016 Rio Games.
