Olympic Medals 2016: Tracking Winners and Final Tally for Monday Results
Niccolo Campriani set a new Olympic record on Day 3 of the Rio de Janeiro Games, qualifying for the final in style in the men’s 10-metre air rifle competition.
The Italian finished with a score of 630.2 to make an early statement. The final of the event will be staged later in the day, when Campriani will face a stiff challenge from the likes of Vladimir Maslennikov and world-record holder Peter Sidi.
It was a record that set the tone for a jam-packed Monday in Brazil, with plenty of medals to be dished out. Indeed, sparks are set to fly in the swimming pool on Monday evening, while there’s more shooting gold to be won, too.
Here is a closer examination of the early action and a brief look at what’s still to come from Rio on Monday. These are the live medal standings:

Although the finals grab most of the attention at the Olympics, the work done in the preliminary rounds can often make for a crucial precedent. Campriani will be hoping that's the case following a brilliant display in the 10-metre air rifle.

The Italian, who is seeking to go one better after a silver medal in this event at London 2012, was in exceptional form in the heats to post his tremendous mark. If he can produce repeat performance in the final, he'll be a difficult man to stop.
That's especially true after the current Olympic champion, Alin Moldoveanu, was eliminated before the final. The Romanian had a day to forget, starting slowly in the first round, never quite recovering and finishing down in 19th.
Looking ahead and to other sporting disciplines, the highlight of day could well come in the pool, with the women’s 100-metre breaststroke final set to be a cracking one.

Not only are the standards high coming into the contest, there’s a bit of needle between some of the competitors, too.
That’s after America’s Lilly King wagged her finger at a television picture of her Russian rival Yuliya Efimova, who was initially banned from taking part in the games due to previous doping breaches, making a No. 1 signal after winning her semi-final.
“You’re shaking your finger No. 1, and you’ve been caught for drug cheating,” said King, who qualified fastest for the final ahead of Efimova, of her action per NBC (h/t Sports Illustrated). “I’m just not a fan.” USA Today’s Christine Brennan agreed:
Aside from what’ll be a fascinating final, the men’s 200-metre freestyle should be a brilliant watch, too. Great Britain’s James Guy faces a battle to win gold, though, as he’ll be in the eighth lane for the race; China's Sun Yang was in imperious form in the heats and is the favourite for victory.

After winning his 19th Olympic gold medal on Sunday, Michael Phelps will be back in action, too. He’ll be seeking to secure a decent position for the final of the 200-metre butterfly, where he’ll face stiff competition from Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh.
Medals will also be dished out in the gymnastics, with the men’s team all-around final to take place. Accuracy and a steady hand will be the aim in the shooting, too, as the men’s trap event reaches its conclusion.
