Sunday's Medal Events
Womenโs Team Archery
South Korea continued its dominance of women's team archery, as it handled Russia in the gold-medal match five set points to one. According toย BBC Sport, it marked the nation's eighth-consecutive gold medal in the event.ย
Russia did win the World Championship in 2015, but South Korea was once again too much on the Olympic stage.ย
Ian Ransom of Reuters noted South Korea was particularly impressive in the conditions after hitting the innermost circle with five of the first six arrows: "South Korea's Ki Bo-bae, Chang Hye-jin and Choi Mi-sun seemed to possess a mystical power to move the wind in their direction."
Womenโs Road Race Cycling
The United States appeared primed to add a medal to its total when Mara Abbott was in position to win the women's road race with the finish line in sight. However, Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands chased her down and captured the gold.
What's more, Sweden's Emma Johansson and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini beat Abbott as well, which meant the American did not even earn a medal despite a valiant performance.
Womenโs Synchronized 3-meter Springboard Diving
Tingmao Shi and Minxia Wu won an historic gold medal at the women's synchronized three-meter springboard diving competition.
According toย Beth Harris of the Associated Press (via theย Charlotte Observer), it marked Wu's fourth-straight gold in the event and fifth career gold (she won the three-meter individual in London as well). Wu became the first woman to capture gold in the same Olympic event four times.
NBC Olympics shared the performance:
Menโs Foil Individual Fencing
Italy's Daniele Garozzo outlasted American Alex Massialas in the gold-medal match in men's foil individual fencing, although it was Massialas with the most memorable performance of the tournament.ย
He scored seven consecutive points in a dramatic comeback win in the quarterfinals against Italy's Giorgio Avola to earn a 15-14 victory. However, he couldn't parlay that momentum into a gold, although he did end a 32-year medal drought for his country in the event, perย NBC Olympics:
Menโs 66-kilogram Judo
Italy's Fabio Basile won the gold in the men's 66-kilogram judo event, althoughย WHDH 7 News in Boston said "not much was expected of Basile entering the day, as he was ranked No. 29 in the world."
Low expectations or not, he ended each of his first three matches with an ippon and beat South Korea's Baul An in the final by scoring another ippon to complete the underdog story.
Womenโs 52-kilogram Judo
One of the most memorable moments of the entire Sunday slate came in the women's 52-kilogram judo, as Majlinda Kelmendi earned Kosovo its first-ever Olympic medal.
The two-time world champion won the gold a mere eight years after her nation declared its independence from Serbia and two years after it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as an independent nation, perย Shawn Smith of NBCOlympics.com.
Smith also said IOC President Thomas Bach was there for Sunday's medal ceremony after he "vowed to try his best to personally present Kosovo its first medal whenever the time came."
Womenโs 10-meter Air Pistol
Zhangย Mengxue wasn't seen as China's best chance at gold in the women's 10-meter air pistol coming into Sunday's competition, but she delivered on the pressure-packed stage nonetheless.ย
According to theย Associated Press (via theย Los Angeles Times), China has nine golds in this event since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, but the country was dealt a blow Sunday when two-time defending champion Wenjun Guo finished in 30th place. However, Zhang captured the gold and helped the nation overcome Guo's struggles.
Womenโs Trap Shooting
Australia's Catherine Skinner was precise when she needed to be on Sunday and beat New Zealand's Natalie Rooney in the gold-medal match of women's trap shooting.
According to theย Associated Press (via theย Los Angeles Times), Skinner connected on 12 of her 15 shots in the finals.ย
Elsewhere, American Corey Cogdell-Unrein beat Spain's Fatima Galvez in a shootout to claim the bronze medal. Cogdell-Unrein is the wife of Chicago Bears defensive lineman Mitch Unrein, and the team showed its support Sunday:
Womenโs 53-kilogram Weightlifting
China's Yajun Li had an opportunity to win gold in the women's 53-kilogram weighlifting contest, but she did not finish the clean and jerk after setting an Olympic record in the first round snatch with a 101-kilogram lift, per theย Associated Press (via theย Los Angeles Times).
Li did not lift the 126 kilograms needed in the final round, which gave the gold medal to Taiwan's Shu-Ching Hsu.
Men's 56-kilogram Weightlifting
China's Qingquan Long won gold at the men's 56-kilogram weightlifting contest and set a world record in the process.
According to theย Associated Press (viaย USA Today), Long posted a total score of 307 kilograms after a final clean and jerk lift of 170 kilograms. Long also won the gold in 2008 and outlasted North Korea's Yun Chol Om (who won the event in London in 2012).
Womenโs 100-meter Butterfly
The real race in the women's 100-meter butterfly was for second, as Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom captured the gold with a time of 55.48 seconds.
According toย Nathan Fennoย of theย Los Angeles Times, the mark was a world record. Sjostrom cruised past Canada's Penny Oleksiak (silver at 56.46 seconds), American Dana Vollmer (bronze) and the rest of the field and almost won by a full second.
Menโs 100-meter Breaststroke
Sjostrom wasn't the only one to set a record in the pool on Sunday.
Great Britain's Adam Peaty took home the gold in the men's 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 57.13 seconds. Peaty set a world record,ย perย NBC Olympics, and outlasted South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh and the United States' Cody Miller.ย
Miller won the bronze medal and set the American record at 58.87 seconds, perย Indiana University Swim and Dive.
Womenโs 400-meter Freestyle
Ledecky figures to be a force throughout the 2016 Games, and she proved why on Sunday with a world-record time of three minutes, 56.46 seconds in the women's 400-meter freestyle.ย
She finished far ahead of silver-medalist Jazz Carlin of Great Britain (4:01.23) and fellow American and bronze-medalist Leah Smith (4:01.92). NBC Olympics passed along an image of just how overpowering Ledecky was on Sunday:
Menโs 4x100-meter Freestyle Relay
In what is often one of the most dramatic events of the entire Olympics, the United States captured gold at the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
Caeleb Dressel, Phelps, Ryan Held and anchor Nathan Adrian turned in a time of three minutes, 9.92 seconds, which eclipsed closest competitors France (3:10.53) and Australia (3:11.37). Nicole Auerbach of USA Todayย broke down the performance based on the individual splits:
The win meant a 23rd medal and 19th gold for the incredible Phelps. Phelps was part of the American team that earned gold in 2008 when Jason Lezak completed a comeback against France's Alain Bernard in the final 50 meters, as well as the 2012 team that lost to France in something of a rematch.
Phelps discussed the importance of Sunday's win in light of those past results on the NBC telecast, viaย Chris Chaseย of Fox Sports: โWe wanted to bring that relay back to American soil. We had some sour taste in our mouth from 2012 and I'm glad that's back on our soil.โ
A motivated Phelps was a dangerous one for the rest of the field Sunday.
