Highlights from Sunday

Sunday delivered several memorable highlights, especially on the women's side.

Starting off the morning was the women's 137-kilometer cycling road race. The United States' Mara Abbott quickly seized first place after Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten unfortunately crashed and lost her lead with 11 kilometers to go. Abbott lost steam in the final minute and allowed three others to pass her, taking away her chances at earning a medal.

All three medal winners ended up finishing within a second of one another. NBC Olympics provided video footage of the race's final sprint, which saw the Netherlands' Anna van der Breggen take first place:

In the afternoon, Kosovo's Majlinda Kelmendi made history for her nation in judo's 52-kilogram weight class. Kelmendi captured the gold medal, which the International Judo Federation noted was a groundbreaking accomplishment for Kosovo:

Then there were fireworks in the pool to end the evening.

The United States’ Katie Ledecky won gold and set a world record in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of three minutes, 56.46 seconds. ESPN Stats & Info's Paul Carr released a mind-blowing statistic after her win:

Later on, the United States’ Michael Phelps added to his all-time record by nabbing his 19th Olympic gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. Phelps’ epic second leg featured a ridiculous turn on the wall that helped his squad gain a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Monday's Main Events

Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be competing for the United States on Monday. The squads are both heavy favorites to win gold, and it's always fun to watch teams of that caliber perform.

The women will play Spain at 11 a.m. ET in Group B action. The Americans broke records for single-game scoring and margin of victory in Sunday's 121-56 demolition of Senegal, but the Spanish women should provide a slightly bigger challenge.

The men overcame China in similar fashion Saturday, winning 119-62 behind a balanced offensive attack and smothering defense. Kevin Durant led the way with 25 points, six assists and four rebounds, but you get the feeling any of the Americans could take over any given game. They'll face Venezuela at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, which should be another blowout.

Another exciting event to tune in for is the men's gymnastics team final at 3 p.m. ET. Eight countries (China, the United States, Russia, Japan, Great Britain, Brazil, Ukraine and Germany) qualified for the event and will each have four gymnasts compete in six different disciplines (floor, vault, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar).

As the ultimate combination of strength, creativity and grace, this is an affair you won’t want to miss.

Aside from the aforementioned competition, medals will also be given out in various diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rugby, shooting, swimming and weightlifting events. The outcomes of said events will be worth keeping an eye on, as the medal standings could change significantly.
