Olympic Swimming 2016: Results and Highlights from Monday's Day 3
The United States had a great night in the pool during Monday night's swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The Americans captured six of the 12 available medals, including a pair of golds that each came with an Olympic record.
Ryan Murphy came into the men's 100-meter backstroke as the favorite, and with good reason. The United States has dominated the event in the past, and that did not change Monday night.
Murphy set an Olympic record with a time of 51.97 seconds to capture the sixth straight gold in the event for Team USA.
The second gold medal of the night for the U.S. came from 19-year-old Lilly King.
King, who engaged in a notable spat with Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova over doping, held off her rival with an Olympic-record time of 1:04.93 in the women's 100-meter breaststroke.
China's Sun Yang also captured gold Monday in the men's 200-meter freestyle, and Hungary's Katinka Hosszu won the 100-meter backstroke. She already has two golds at the Rio Games and is a favorite for a third Tuesday night.
One American swimmer who didn't have a good night was Missy Franklin.
Franklin was eliminated from medal contention in the women's 200-meter freestyle after finishing eighth in her semifinal heat.
