Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Latest Reaction and Standings for Sunday Results
Shooting once again headlined the medal count at the 2016 Olympics on Sunday after Australia's Catherine Skinner stormed to victory in the final of the women's trap event in Rio de Janeiro.
New Zealand's Natalie Rooney collected the silver medal, while Corey Cogdell of the United States was fortunate to snatch the bronze after Spain's Fatima Galvez slipped up in the bronze-medal shoot-off.
The result came just a day after Virginia Thrasher of the United States clinched a shock triumph in the women's 10-metre air rifle final, joining Skinner in gilded glory.
China's Mengxue Zhang also finished with gold in the women's 10-metre air pistol final, where Russian Vitalina Batsarashkina and Greek Anna Korakaki took silver and bronze, respectively.
Elsewhere, there were frustrations from onlookers in Lagoa, where conditions led to all the days' rowing events being cancelled early, as confirmed by Simon Peach of the Press Association:
There was also major controversy after it was reported by the Guardian that Serbia had "advised its athletes" to "withdraw from any medal ceremonies" if it meant sharing a podium with athletes from Kosovo.
Elsewhere, Great Britain's Andy Murray also booked his place in the second round of the men's tennis tournament after defeating Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-2.
Later on Sunday evening, fans will also see medals awarded in the women's team archery event, as well as judo, weightlifting and the women's three-metre synchro springboard final.
Read on for a look at the updated medal table, complete with a recap of the biggest podium action so far today.
Skinner Dominates Tasman Duel
Australasia could be extremely proud of its performances in the women's trap semi-final, where Australia's Skinner and Rooney of New Zealand went through to the gold-medal final.
The United States' Cogdell and Spain's Galvez were forced to settle for contention in the bronze-medal final, although the American had her chance at the top spot, per John Marshall of the Associated Press:
Cogdell left Galvez open to take the bronze following a mistake of her own near the climax of their play-off, but the Spaniard faltered herself to force the sudden-death shoot-off, where the latter emerged triumphant.
After being two shots from a medal of her own, Galvez missed again when it mattered to hand the bronze to Cogdell, with the American claiming the second Olympic medal of her career.
Skinner's performance in the final was befitting of a champion, where she shot 12 of a possible 15 targets to outdo neighbour Rooney, with compatriot and fellow Olympian Tamsyn Lewis Manou joining in the celebrations:
The gold medal is Australia's third of the 2016 Rio Olympics thus far, and she'll savour the victory all the more considering the final swoop came against such a local rival in the shape of Rooney.
