Olympics 2016: Twitter Reacts to Saturday's Standings and Results

David McCrackenAug 6, 2016

Day one of the 2016 Rio Olympics saw 19-year old Virginia Thrasher win the first gold medal of the Games for the United States of America and also saw Australia dominate in the pool. Twitter (to no one’s surprise) was just as active during the Games as the actual athletes participating in them.

It’s too bad that the keyboard warriors of the world aren’t given medals for their work.

Medals were given out early on as Thrasher was able to outshoot the 2004 Olympic gold medalist, Du Li, with a cumulative score of 208 in the 10-meter Air Rifle.

NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano, despite a busy day with the NFL Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony underway, was able to congratulate Thrasher on her Olympic debut.

And what better way to commemorate an American victory than by sporting national pride through memes?

While America enjoyed the early victory on the day, it was Australia who really shined on the big stage—in particular, in the swimming pool, as ESPN Stats & Info's Paul Carr noted:

With two golds in swimming—thanks to Mack Horton and the women’s relay team—Australia improved on an already impressive Day 1.

In archery, Taylor Worth, Ryan Tyack and Alec Potts beat China in the bronze-medal match to put Australia on the map early before the men's and women's swim teams took to the pool.

Horton's victory in the 400-meter freestyle didn't come without some controversy, however, as he defeated China's defending gold medalist Sun Yang in the final heat, but not before saying this in regard to Yang: "...I don't have time or respect for drug cheats," according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The United States captured three silver medals in the first four swimming finals held at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium but left Saturday without the taste of gold in the pool.

Chase Kalisz captured the silver in the men's 4x100-meter individual medley, while Maya DiRado finished second behind a world-record swim from Katinka Hosszu of Hungary in the women's 4x100-meter individual medley. The U.S women's team later took silver behind the Australians in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Coming off a World Cup Finals victory, the USA women's soccer team took the pitch to square off against France, where Carli Lloyd did what she does best, scoring the only goal in the 64th minute in a 1-0 win.

Lloyd and the rest of her team were clearly excited about the victory, but they have their eyes set on what comes next.

While Day 1 was a great start for Australia and America, the best part of it came from social media, as Ghostbusters actress and comedian Leslie Jones took to Twitter and became our new favorite sports commentator.

Here is a sample of her work below, which can be found at her Twitter handle @Lesdoggg along with the rest of her hilarious tweets.

Warning: some of her tweets are NSFW.

Let's hope Leslie Jones continues the fun throughout the Games.
