The United States is expected to be at the top of the medal standings at the conclusion of the Olympic Games, with China close behind.
Both nations got off to a good start on Day 1. Virginia "Ginny" Thrasher won gold for the United States in the women's 10-meter air rifle. She just completed her freshman year at West Virginia, and she had done very well in college shooting events. However, the step up in Olympic competition seemed to be a huge jump.
Nevertheless, she defeated Chinese shooters Du Li and Yi Siling to win the top prize. Those two won silver and bronze in the event.
The road race in men's cycling was perhaps the most dramatic event on Saturday.
Greg van Avermaet of Belgium won the gold medal as he outdueled Denmark's Jakob Fuglsang in the final sprint to the finish.
Van Avermaet won the 237.5-kilometer race with the same 6:10:05 time as Fuglsang, but van Avermaet was slightly ahead at the finish. Rafal Majka of Poland held the lead during the final descent, but he had to settle for the bronze medal.

Vincenzo Nibali of Italy and Sergio Henao of Colombia had held the lead in the final portion of the race, but a late crash took both of them out of the picture.
Paula Pareto of Argentina took home the gold in the 48-kilogram division in women's judo, defeating South Korea's Jeong Bokyeong in her final match.
Pareto won four matches during the day of competition, and she did not give up a point in any of her matches.
Ami Kondo of Japan and Otgontsetseg Galbadrakh of Kazakhstan both won bronze medals in the event.
Mack Horton of Australia held off reigning Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang of Japan in the 400-meter freestyle. Horton took the lead early in the race, and then managed to clinch the gold medal over his rival by recording a time of 3:41.65 in the event.
