The Rio Games' official Twitter account shared the American's gold medal moment:
Here are the final standings for the event:
| Gold | Virginia Thrasher | United States | 208.0 |
| Silver | Du Li | China | 207.0 |
| Bronze | Yi Siling | China | 185.4 |
Du had been expected to win the competition after dominating in qualifying, but the 34-year-old met her match when the world-ranked No. 23 rose to the occasion in dramatic circumstances.

Du was the gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, capturing victory on the final shot, and won the small-bore rifle competition at the 2008 Beijing Games. Yi won gold in 10-metre air rifle at the 2012 London Olympics.
Russian Daria Vdovina had been in contention but finished fifth. Germany's Barbara Engleder also made a push but couldn't find the quality to place herself on the rostrum.
Vietnam Claim Men's 10-Metre Air Pistol

Hoang Xuan Vinh of Vietnam pipped the field to the gold medal with his last shot as home favourite and world No. 1 Felipe Almeida Wu claimed Brazil's first medal of the Games.
Wu was set for the gold but had to settle for second place as the Vietnam sharpshooter made a late dramatic bid.
China's world ranked No. 10 shooter, Pang Wei, grabbed bronze to complete the podium line up.
Here are the final standings for the event:
| Gold | Hoang Xuan Vinh | Vietnam | 202.5 |
| Silver | Felipe Almeida Wu | Brazil | 202.1 |
| Bronze | Pang Wei | China | 180.4 |

The 41-year-old was a shock winner as the shooting events produced the surprising results of the day.
The Vietnam shooter's reputation is short of Wu's, who was expected to prevail at his home Games.
The day belonged to Thrasher as she earned the right to stardom as Rio's first gold medalist.
The teenager wasn't expected to threaten the medal podium but produced the performance of a lifetime to get America off to the perfect start in South America.
