Swimmers Set to Star on Monday
The pursuit of gold in the men’s 200-metre freestyle should be one of the most intriguing finals of the week, with China’s Sun Yang and Great Britain’s James Guy set to renew their burgeoning rivalry.
Sun is the slender favourite coming into this one having impressed in the build-up to the Games and looking in strong form in Rio. However, Guy may feel as though he has a mental edge in the 200, having beaten the Chinese star to clinch world championship gold last year.
The Briton is confident of a strong performance in what is the biggest event of his life. “My preparation is good,” he said, per Jonathan McEvoy of the Daily Mail. “I feel as if I am in the right mental place all the time. I have never had a problem getting there.”

There’ll be plenty of competition in the form of the fast-finishing Sun, though, who will be keen to better his silver medal in the 200 at London four years ago. South Africa’s Chad le Clos has also shown fine form in the freestyle event as well as his usual butterfly discipline.
Lilly King will be the star attraction in the women’s breaststroke event. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise, winning the two breaststroke events at the U.S. Olympic trials. As the USA Swimming Twitter feed noted in the build-up to the Games, she’s been in a relaxed mood despite the expectation:
Away from the pool but also in the water, the 10-metre synchronised men’s diving winners will also be crowned on Monday.
Two gold medals will be dished out in the shooting on the day, both in men’s events. First up is the short-range, 10-metre air rifle competition, with the Chinese duo of Yifei Cao and Haoran Yang set to scrap it out at the National Shooting Center; in the men’s trap, Spain’s Alberto Fernandez will be the man to beat.

At Carioca Arena 2, two judo medals will be won, with the 73 kilogram and 57 kilogram competitions taking place in the men’s and women’s disciplines, respectively.
After their match with China on Saturday, the men's United States basketball side will play their second contest of the Olympics and will be heavy favourites to get the better of Venezuela. As we can see courtesy of the team’s official Twitter feed, they’ve been in fine form leading up to the competition:
The duels in the pool will be the highlights of Monday’s action. Guy struggled for his best at the recent European Championship and will need to up his levels to get close to Sun and Le Clos. But the youngster has shown he can step his game up for big occasions.
Dealing with the spectacle and the pressure will also be the challenge facing teenager King as she goes in search of Olympic glory.
