Aly Raisman Wins Silver Medal During Individual All-Around at 2016 Olympics
After narrowly missing out four years ago, Aly Raisman captured an Olympic silver medal in the women's individual all-around competition. The 22-year-old finished with a final score of 60.098, per Rio2016.com. She finished behind fellow American Simone Biles, who won gold with a score of 62.198.
It marked the second medal of the 2016 Games for Raisman, who was part of the United States women's team that won gold in the team final on Tuesday. USA Gymnastics reacted to her performance:
The medal is likely all the more meaningful for Raisman considering what happened four years ago. At the London Olympics in 2012, Raisman's final score of 59.566 was identical to that of Russia's Aliya Mustafina, leaving the two in a tie for third place. Through a convoluted tiebreaker, officials awarded Mustafina the bronze medal.
"I'll admit it still rankles a bit," Raisman wrote in a piece for espnW in April 2014.
Even if she hadn't medaled in the all-around program, simply reaching Rio was a major accomplishment for Raisman. Gymnasts tend to have only one Olympic window for success. Before Raisman and Gabby Douglas qualified for the United States, Dominique Dawes and Amy Chow (1996 and 2000) were the last American females to compete in back-to-back Olympics gymnastics events.
"She's like our sleeping little grandma," teammate Simone Biles said of Raisman, per NBC Sports' Nick Zaccardi.
The addition of Raisman—a relative elder stateswoman—to the Team USA squad was far from a token gesture. At the U.S. Olympic team trials in July, she finished third in the all-around, balance beam and vault programs and second in the floor exercise.
She also proved critical in the team competition on Tuesday as a veteran leader and elite performer.
