Usain Bolt Wins Gold Medal During Men's 200M at 2016 Olympics
Usain Bolt claimed an unprecedented third consecutive 200-metre Olympic gold medal as he stormed to victory in impressive fashion on Thursday at Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Stadium.
The Jamaican, who holds the world record in the event, beat Canada's Andre De Grasse and France's Christophe Lemaitre into the silver- and bronze-medal positions, respectively, setting a time of 19.78 seconds.
He was the only runner to record a time of under 20 seconds in the race, and he made it look simple. He sped out to an early lead and, in typical Bolt-like fashion, seemed to ease up in the final stretch of the race while maintaining a comfortable lead.
NBC Olympics showed the moment he crossed the line:
Bolt, 29, came into the event as the red-hot favourite, having won six gold medals at each of the last two Olympics in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. He started his Rio Games on the right foot, too, winning the 100 meters by 0.08 seconds over American Justin Gatlin.
There were concerns about his fitness ahead of Rio 2016 after he missed the Jamaican trials back in July due to injury, but a resounding victory in the 200 metres at London's recent Anniversary Games proved he was in good shape.
After his win in the UK capital, he said he was getting back to his best, per Aimee Lewis of BBC Sport: "I'm getting there. I'm not fully in shape. I didn't execute the start well, but I came through injury-free, so I'm happy with that."
And so it proved as Bolt further etched himself into Olympic lore, adding to his legend as he won a staggering eighth gold medal in front of an adoring Brazilian crowd.
