Simone Biles Wins Bronze Medal During Women's Balance Beam at 2016 Olympics
Simone Biles has continued to add to her long list of accomplishments at the 2016 Rio Games, earning the bronze medal on the balance beam on Monday.
Biles finished with a score of 14.733, according to Rio2016.com. Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands won the gold with a score of 15.466, while American Laurie Hernandez won the silver with a mark of 15.333.
Biles came into the Games as arguably the world's top woman on the balance beam, as she earned a bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships and gold at the event in 2014 and 2015. She accumulated 14 medals in World Championships competition, making her one of the gymnasts to watch at these Games.
Indeed, expectations coming into Rio were huge for Biles. She'd won three straight World Championship golds in the individual all-around competition. At Rio, she's more than lived up to the hype, winning the gold medal in the team final, the individual all-around competition and the vault.
Medaling on the balance beam, however, was one of the foregone conclusions of the Rio Games. Nobody performs a more difficult or impressive routine than Biles, giving her an immediate advantage over the competition. In essence, Biles was really competing against herself for a medal.
While she would have hoped for gold, her performance to this point in Rio has been nothing short of legendary. She can still earn a fourth gold medal and fifth medal overall in the individual floor exercise final on Tuesday.
