Missy Franklin Fails to Reach Finals of Women's 200M Freestyle at 2016 Olympics
Swimming superstar Missy Franklin entered the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro with five Olympic medals, but she failed to add to her illustrious collection in the women's 200-meter freestyle.
Franklin finished in eighth place in her semifinal heat Monday, per Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports. She posted a time of one minute, 57.56 seconds and was officially eliminated from the final after the completion of the second semifinal heat.
NBC Olympics shared the times of the heat:
Forde noted she has two more events to look forward to in Rio:
For anyone who watched her during the 2012 Games in London as a 17-year-old phenom, it was likely surprising that Franklin didn’t come through on the Olympic stage this time. She captured four gold medals and a bronze in seven different events in London while establishing herself as one of the biggest stars of the sport in 2012.
She also took home five medals at the 2015 World Championships and held the record for a female swimmer with 11 world championship titles heading to Rio, per NBC Olympics.
Though she didn’t reach the finals Monday, she had an impressive performance at the U.S. trials just to qualify for the 200-meter freestyle. Franklin finished in seventh place in the 100-meter backstroke at the trials (one of the events in which she won gold during the London Olympics) but needed to respond the following day at the 200-meter freestyle.
She did exactly that, finishing in second place against a loaded field that featured Katie Ledecky (who won), defending Olympic champion Allison Schmitt and Olympic teammate Leah Smith.
Franklin’s Rio schedule was not nearly as busy as her one in London, and she discussed her mindset heading into the Rio Games, per the Associated Press (via NBC Olympics).
“One of the things I've been trying to do this whole year is not compare myself to where I was in 2012," she said. "I came in here to be the best of who I am right now, not who I was four years ago.”
Franklin may not be on the same level she was in London, but she still has one of the best resumes in swimming history and will look to bounce back from her disappointing result in her last two events.
