Michael Phelps Wins Gold Medal in Men's 200M Butterfly at 2016 Olympics

Timothy RappAug 9, 2016

Michael Phelps added to his incredible Olympic haul Tuesday, securing his 24th medal by winning gold in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Phelps finished with a time of 1:53.36. It extended his record count of gold medals to 20 and atoned for a silver in the event in 2012.

Phelps also won gold in the event at the 2004 and 2008 Games. Darren Rovell of ESPN put the win in context:

Japan's Masato Sakai earned silver, while Tamas Kenderesi of Hungary took bronze. Sakai finished just four hundredths of a second behind Phelps, and Kenderesi was 26 hundredths back.

Phelps paced the field for nearly the entire race, trailing at the 25-meter mark before springing into the lead after the turn. He never trailed the rest of the way, holding on late as Sakai came from behind to nearly win.

Phelps, in his fifth Games, long ago cemented his status as the most decorated Olympian ever, let alone the greatest swimmer in history. Coming into the 2016 Games, he had already won the most medals in Olympic history (22) and the most golds (18). These Games were to be his farewell tour, and few folks would have thought less of the 31-year-old if he hadn't added to his tally.

But Phelps, the consummate champion, won't leave without taking more hardware with him. And he still has three more opportunities, as he'll also compete in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.

If he hasn't already, Phelps could accumulate enough medals in Rio to ensure he'll hold onto the title of most decorated Olympian for years to come.
