Simone Biles Wins Gold Medal in Women's Vault at 2016 Olympics

Joseph ZuckerAug 14, 2016

Simone Biles captured gold Sunday in the women's vault at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The American posted a huge score of 15.966 with her two vaults, beating Russia's Maria Paseka (15.253), who claimed silver, and Switzerland's Giulia Steingruber (15.216), who won bronze, by a massive margin.

So far, it's been a great Olympics for Biles:

USA Today's Nancy Armour joked she has become bored by Biles' sustained dominance:

The Football Ramble's Luke Moore came up with a novel idea to save time for all of Biles' trips to the medal podium:

According to ESPN Stats & Info, she's the first American to win three golds in female gymnastics in one Olympics.

Despite her being the reigning all-around world champion and arguably the best female gymnast in the world, Biles was a slight underdog in the vault—at least as much of an underdog as she could possibly be. Among the various disciplines, the vault was historically her weakest.

At the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, the 19-year-old earned gold in the individual all-around, balance beam and floor routine. Vault was the lone holdout, with Biles finishing with bronze. She had previously won silver in the vault at the 2013 and 2014 World Championships.

Before Sunday, no American woman had won gold in the vault at the Olympics, either.

Of course, Biles made a major statement at the United States Olympic trials, earning a score of 16.200 with her performance on the vault below:

Teammate Aly Raisman talked about how Biles' supreme talent made her stand out, per Linda Robertson of the Miami Herald: "When the coaches talk to us, they say don't even count Simone; she's in a different league. There's so much pressure I don't even know how she does it. Her level of difficulty is so high, but she's able to control it. She just does not fall. She's so consistent."

Biles was set up to be one of the biggest stars at this year's Olympics.

American viewers who only follow gymnastics every four years haven't seen her work at the world and U.S. championships. Like countless gymnasts before her, Biles has become a household name as a result of her Olympic accomplishments.

After her vault triumph, Biles remains on track to win five golds in Rio—beam and floor remain—having already prevailed in the women's team event and individual all-around.
