Simone Biles Wins Gold Medal During Women's Floor at 2016 Olympics
Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles had never been to an Olympics before the 2016 competition in Rio de Janeiro, but she entered the Games as the premier gymnast in the world. She proved just why that was the case on Tuesday when she won the gold medal in the women’s floor event.
Biles finished with a score of 15.966 while Team USA's Aly Raisman won silver and Great Britain's Amy Tinkler captured bronze.
ESPN Stats & Info showed how important Biles' victory was:
It comes as no surprise Biles won a medal in Tuesday's competition because she arrived in Rio with a head-turning resume.
According to Julia Fincher of NBCOlympics.com, Biles boasts 14 world championship medals (10 of them happen to be gold) and won the last three all-around world championship titles and last four all-around national championship titles. While she wasn’t old enough to compete in the 2012 Games in London, she hasn’t lost an all-around competition since 2013.
Simply put, Biles has been a world apart from the rest of the sport for the four years leading up to the 2016 Games, and she has finally earned some Olympic recognition.
Biles is also the reigning world champion in floor exercise. Fincher described her worlds performance in a separate piece: "Floor was another victory dance, where her tumbling seemed so effortless and natural that she found time to shoot a wink to Shawn Johnson, watching from the stands, in the middle of the routine."
That effortless brilliance was on display again in Rio during her medal-winning performance.
Mary Lou Retton—who won the 1984 Olympic all-around championship—did not hold back when discussing Biles leading up to the 2016 Games, per NBCOlympics.com: "She may be the most talented gymnast I’ve ever seen in my life, honestly. And I don’t even think she’s tapped into what she really can do. I think she’s unbeatable."
That all-time talent was crystal clear during the floor competition at the 2016 Olympics.
