Jordan Spieth at British Open 2016: Sunday Leaderboard Score, Twitter Reaction

Matt JonesJul 17, 2016

Jordan Spieth signed off on a final-round score of 68 on Sunday, giving him an overall score of two over for the 2016 British Open.

After three tough days at Royal Troon Golf Club, the 22-year-old bagged his first eagle of the tournament at the fourth hole, going out one under after a bogey at eight. Back-to-back birdies at 10 and 11 added more momentum to his round, before another bogey and another birdie saw him finish three under for the day.

Here is the full scorecard for Spieth’s best round of the week and a detailed look at how the two-time major champion fared at this tricky links venue.

This is how things are shaping up in the final round of The Open Championship:

Spieth Finishes Strongly

On Saturday, Spieth’s threatened to catch fire in the early stages, as he charged to a four-under in the first seven holes. Day 4 got off to a much less spectacular start.

Still, the American played pretty solid golf overall, rattling off three consecutive pars to begin his round. At the fourth, though, he gave the spectators who ventured out early a big treat.

Spieth struck a brilliant second shot into the green at the par-five fourth, and for the first time this week, he helped himself to an eagle with a fine putt. Here’s a look at the first eagle of the day:

The world No. 3 looked to be in good touch at this juncture, although he let some opportunities for birdie slip by at the next three holes, stringing together another trio of pars.

Spieth came to lament those misses at the eighth, as he skewed his tee shot to the Postage Stamp and made bogey. He suffered a double at this hole on Friday, and you suspect the youngster would have been glad to get that hole out of the way for good.

After a par at the ninth, the back nine loomed for the American, and as we can see here courtesy of the competition’s Twitter feed, this is where he really struggled:

However, Spieth found his groove after the turn. At 10 and 11, he knocked his iron onto the green, and on both he made excellent putts for birdie, quickly moving up to two over for the tournament. As noted by Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News, this upturn in form came a little too late to challenge for the Claret Jug:

The back-to-back birdies were followed by three consecutive pars, with Spieth showing inventiveness to prevent blemishes on his card.

Eventually, he did drop a shot on the back nine, with a long putt for par lipping out at 15, much to the frustration of the two-time major winner. He channelled his angst in the right way, though, grabbing a birdie at the par-five 16th.

After a par on 17, Spieth seemed relaxed heading to the last, where he missed a good chance for birdie, per Townsend:

Afterward, Spieth suggested he doesn't feel as though he is too far short of his very best form, per Mike McAllister of the PGATour.com:

In what’s surely set to be a long and illustrious career, this chapter at Troon will not live too long in Spieth's memory. Nevertheless, he’s had to battle hard to get around this course and will have learned plenty about links play at the highest level over the last four days.

While there's been a lot of scrutiny of the American’s game this week, he’ll still be one of the favourites for glory for the PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club later this month—and, probably, a better player for the chastening few days he’s endured recently.
