NBA Summer League 2016: Scores and Highlights from Tuesday's Las Vegas Results
Tuesday was the NBA Las Vegas Summer League's last batch of games before the playoffs kick off Wednesday.
In total, 12 teams were in action as a combination of rookies and players looking to win spots on big league rosters continued their attempts to impress their respective organizations.
Here are the latest Las Vegas Summer League results from Tuesday:
| Washington Wizards | 87-85 | Brooklyn Nets |
| Portland Trail Blazers | 92-89 | Utah Jazz |
| Boston Celtics | 88-82 | Dallas Mavericks |
| Miami Heat | 80-71 | Phoenix Suns |
| Chicago Bulls | 79-76 | San Antonio Spurs |
| Golden State Warriors | 85-77 | Philadelphia 76ers |
Wizards 87, Nets 85
The Washington Wizards overcame a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to pick up their second win of the summer league.
They pulled out the win on a last-second layup after D.J. Cooper picked off Brooklyn Nets forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson's errant pass. Cooper then fed Jarell Eddie for the final basket, which came with 0.1 seconds left on the clock.
Washington held Brooklyn scoreless for the final minute and 55 seconds of the game to hand the Nets their first loss of the summer league.
Eddie's game-winner tied Kelly Oubre Jr. for a team-high 16 points on Tuesday to lead the Wizards while putting a damper on Jefferson's solid day as he went 7-of-14 from the field for 19 points.
The Wizards' win ensures that both teams must wait to find out their playoff fates. The two wins apiece give the Wizards and Nets a good chance to finish in the top eight of this 24-team league, which would give them a bye into Thursday's playoff action.
Trail Blazers 92, Jazz 89
The Portland Trail Blazers won the first sudden-death, double-overtime game of the NBA Summer League when Pat Connaughton drained a wide-open three-pointer, via NBA TV:
Utah won the tip to start the double overtime, but a pass by Trey Lyles, who led all scorers with 30 points, went off the hands of Quincy Ford and out of bounds to give Portland possession.
Lyles was unstoppable on Tuesday, hitting 5-of-7 from distance, including this ridiculous heave to beat the shot clock, via NBA TV:
But Utah spent most of the game playing from behind until the final minute. Four consecutive made free throws from Ford in the final 28.4 seconds eliminated Portland's four-point lead to force overtime.
With the Jazz down 87-82 a minute into overtime, Lyles made it a two-point game with a three, but on the next two possessions, with opportunities to tie the game, he turned it over.
It looked like the game was over when a pair of free throws put Portland up 89-85, but Luis Montero fouled Spencer Butterfield while the Jazz guard was shooting a three with 1.2 seconds left. Butterfield hit the first two and intentionally missed the second, only to have Lyles tip in the rebound to tie the game at the buzzer, via NBA TV:
C.J. Fair led the Blazers with 20 points, while Noah Vonleh recorded his third straight summer-league double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to secure Portland's first summer-league win.
Celtics 88, Mavericks 82
The Boston Celtics picked up their first win of the summer league with a six-point victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
No. 3 overall pick Jaylen Brown recorded 20, including this big dunk in the first quarter, via NBA Summer League:
That kind of play around the basket made Brown hard to stop as the Mavericks resorted to fouling and sending him to the line. Of his 20 points, 12 of them came from the free-throw line on 17 attempts.
Terry Rozier led the Celtics with 23 points on 5-of-8 shooting and, like Brown, took full advantage of the free-throw line, going 13-of-16. The 33 combined attempts from Brown and Rozier were 10 more than the entire Mavericks team.
Dallas' Justin Anderson led all scorers with 29 points, shooting 50 percent from three-point range while adding 11 rebounds for a solid double-double. But he also made highlights on the defensive end, via NBA Summer League:
Jonathan Gibson, who went undrafted in 2010, added 26 points for Dallas in its losing effort. No other Maverick had more than six points.
Heat 80, Suns 71
A trio of undrafted players allowed the Miami Heat to hand the Phoenix Suns their first summer league loss.
Michael Carrera and Damion Lee, both undrafted this year, recorded 16 and 13 points respectively while Okaro White, who went undrafted in 2014, added 12.
They managed to get past a Suns team that was headlined by 2016 second-round selection Tyler Ulis, who recorded 16 points, seven assists and five steals.
He also showed off some nifty skills near the basket, via NBA TV:
Phoenix's Alan Williams led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. However, if Tuesday's game was a regular season affair, he wouldn't have come close to those numbers as he was whistled for 10 personal fouls.
Bulls 79, Spurs 76
The Chicago Bulls improved to 3-0 in Las Vegas Summer League play with a narrow three-point win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday evening.
Second-year forward Bobby Portis was Chicago's best player in the win, posting 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes.
The Bulls also received strong contributions from 2016 first-round pick Denzel Valentine, who notched 15 points and six boards in the win. Elsewhere, point guard Jerian Grant poured in 10 points working as one of Chicago's primary ball-handlers.
Spurs swingman Jonathon Simmons led all players with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and his niftiest two points came off a slick dribble-drive, as NBA Summer League documented on Twitter:
Jarnell Stokes added 15 points and seven boards for the Spurs, who dropped to 2-1 in Sin City with the loss.
Warriors 85, Sixers 77
The Philadelphia 76ers dropped to 0-3 in Las Vegas with an 85-77 loss to the Golden State Warriors despite some strong play from No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons.
While his jump shot remained a work-in-progress (3-of-8 shooting from the field), Simmons continued to impress thanks to his elite athleticism, as the team's official Twitter account documented:
Simmons' stellar court vision was also on display once again, as he repeatedly found teammates cutting to the basket:
All told, Simmons finished the night with eight points, eight rebounds and six assists to go with a steal and five turnovers.
Christian Wood, who has been arguably the biggest surprise of Summer League, lit up the box score once again with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go with five boards.
Royce O'Neale and A.J. English led the Warriors with 16 points apiece, while second-round selection Patrick McCaw posted 11 points on a tidy 5-of-8 shooting.
Golden State improved to 1-2 by virtue of Tuesday night's win.
