Real Reject Chelsea Offer, Decide to Keep Morata

Saturday, July 9

According to Marca's Ruben Jimenez, club president Florentino Perez has decided to keep Morata in the Spanish capital this summer, rejecting an approach from Chelsea in the process. The report said the Blues offered €60 million in an attempt to beat Arsenal to his signature, but Perez wants to add more youth to the side and will give Morata a chance to prove himself.

Morata spent the last two years with Serie A giants Juventus, where he established himself as one of Europe's top young forwards and Spain's top option up front. He anchored the La Roja attack during the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament and finished as the team's top scorer.

Real inserted a buy-back clause into the deal that sent him to Turin, and they triggered the clause in June, per Jimenez. The presence of Karim Benzema meant most fans and analysts assumed Los Blancos wanted to sell the 23-year-old for a profit, however, and both Chelsea and Arsenal were frequently mentioned as a possible destination.

Reports of Chelsea's €60 million offer were surprising, as the Blues have already added a young striker during the summer transfer window in Michy Batshuayi. On top of that, Jimenez reports Real are holding out for €75 million, a fee clubs are unlikely to spend on a talented, but flawed, forward.

Per WhoScored.com, Morata has never hit double-digit goals in a single competition in his career. He's expected to challenge Benzema for playing time next season and will likely see the bulk of his minutes in cup matches.
