Jon Leuer to Sign with Pistons: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
Unrestricted free-agent forward Jon Leuer is reportedly set to join the Detroit Pistons after coming to terms on a four-year contract Saturday.ย
Marc Stein of ESPN reported it's a $42 million deal. David Mayo of MLive.com noted the final figure could actually be $41 million. Leuer's sports management firm, Priority Sports, confirmed the agreement.
Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey provided some context on the potential value of the addition:
Leuer showed signs of progress this past season, his fifth in the NBA, with the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 8.5 points and 5.6 rebounds despite playing fewer than 19 minutes per contest. He also shot 38 percent from beyond the arc.
A second-round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2011, he's also spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies. He's never been able to carve out an extensive role, but the contract he received from Detroit suggests that may finally change.
Craig Grialouย of Arizona Sports noted back in April that the 27-year-old Wisconsin product came away from the campaign pleased with his all-around play.
"I've always had a lot of confidence in myself," Leuer said. "I've had stretches in the past where I played a lot and been productive, so I felt like I've always known I can play in this league and play at a high level, but having, I guess, my best year so far just kind of furthers that confidence."
Right now, the Pistons are assembling a roster with a lot of promising pieces.ย Marc Steinย of ESPN.com reported Friday that they came to terms on a long-term contract extension with center Andre Drummond, which was a crucial step in the process.
They may seek to add another perimeter scorer during the remaining portion of the offseason. Then the onus will be on head coach Stan Van Gundy to find the right lineup combinations to build off the Pistons' first playoff appearance in seven years this past season.
Leuer will slot in as a stretch 4. The question is how much playing time he may get, and that likely depends on Drummond's development as a rim protector. If the Pistons feel comfortable with his strides defensively, that could allow their latest addition to play a large role.
