Vincenzo Montella to Milan: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Tom SunderlandJun 28, 2016

AC Milan have appointed Vincenzo Montella as their new manager on a two-year contract.

The club's official Twitter account confirmed on Tuesday that Montella would arrive at the San Siro as a replacement for Cristian Brocchi, who endured a disappointing two-month spell as caretaker manager:

The Guardian's Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday that Milan were set to appoint Montella as their new head coach after he guided Sampdoria to 15th in Serie A last season:

According to Football Italia, Milan were waiting to sanction a compensation fee to sign Montella, but his Sampdoria release clause was a fairly modest sum of just €1.1 million (£910,000).

Gianluca Di Marzio translator David Amoyal spoke positively of Montella's appointment with the Rossoneri and the promise it holds for Milan:

The Italian giants have had a nightmarish spell in their history of late, finishing seventh in Serie A in 2015-16, their highest placement since ending the 2012-13 campaign in third.

The Rossoneri haven't featured in European competition over the past two seasons, and bringing UEFA Champions League football back to the club will be one of Montella's highest priorities.

This will be the 42-year-old's fifth managerial position in his career after leading Catania, Fiorentina and Sampdoria in the past, as well as a spell as interim chief of AS Roma in 2011.

ESPN FC's Sumeet Paul reported earlier in June that a Chinese consortium is set to take over Milan, but supporters can at least rest easy knowing Brocchi's replacement is now in place.
