US Olympic Swimming Trials 2016: Results, Qualifying Times for Sunday

Brian MarronJun 26, 2016

The U.S. began its process to select its men's and women's swimming teams for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro at the trials in Omaha, Nebraska, on Sunday.

The day featured the finals for both the men's and the women's 400-meter individual medleys as well as the men's 400-meter freestyle. The semifinals for the men's 100-meter breaststroke and the women's 100-meter butterfly also took place. The top two finishers for each final move on to the Olympics.

Take a look below at the top three for each final event:

The full results from Sunday and the schedule for the remainder of the trials are available on USA Swimming's website. The site also features the results for the preliminary trials, which took place earlier in the day. The Olympic trials run from Sunday through July 3.

Michael Phelps did not participate, but the 18-time gold medalist is scheduled to compete in five events during his final Olympic Trials. Decorated teammate Ryan Lochte was in the pool, and he did not perform well.

He qualified for the finals of the 400-meter individual medley after placing second in the preliminaries, but Chase Kalisz caught him. The final heat proved to be more of the same, as Lochte relinquished another early lead to Kalisz. Jay Litherland pushed hard for final 100 meters, and he overtook Lochte to grab the final Olympic spot.

Per USA Today's Christine Brennan, Lochte said he raced with an injury:

Lochte can still make it to Rio with other events, but the 400-meter individual medley will not be one of them.

USA Swimming congratulated Kalisz on becoming a first-time Olympian:

In the men's freestyle, Connor Jaeger and Conor Dwyer finished comfortably in front of the pack. Dwyer, a Florida alumnus, received some recognition from his school:

Dwyer and Jaeger have already competed at the Olympics, and Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde praised their experience:

In the last final trial, Maya DiRado clinched her first Olympic trip by winning the women's 400-meter individual medley. Veteran Elizabeth Beisel, who is making her third appearance as a U.S. Olympian, will be joining her.

Heading into the race, DiRado said this would be her last effort to make the Olympics, per the Associated Press' Beth Harris.

"It's so much easier to be excited about all of this and give it everything I have when I know that this is my last go-through," DiRado said Saturday. "I think it's a sign that my preparation this year has been really good and that I'm ready to move on to something new."

Keep an eye on DiRado in August to see if she can make the most of her first Olympic appearance. Having an experienced presence like Beisel with her will certainly help.

Kalisz is another swimmer to watch. He was the best competitor throughout the day against a talented field, and he showed on two occasions that he can make a run down the stretch and win races. Look for him to contend in Rio due to his stamina and closing speed.
