USA Men's Gymnastics Team for 2016 Rio Olympics Announced: Comments, Reaction
After the second day of trials ended in St. Louis on Saturday, the U.S. men's gymnastics team was announced for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
NBC Sports posted the roster on Twitter:
Sam Mikulak was sensational throughout the trials, and he figures to be the star of the group moving forward.
The full results are available on USA Gymnastics' official website.
NBC Olympics shared the unveiling of the roster, which was chosen by a selection committee:
Jake Dalton, Mikulak and John Orozco will return from the 2012 team, while Chris Brooks and Alex Naddour will participate after serving as alternates at the London Games.
Danell Leyva was a notable name who did not make the cut after performing in 2012. Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press predicted he would make the squad, but it was not to be:
Many took to Twitter to congratulate the team, and Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson was among the first to do so:
Fox 26's Mark Berman joined Patterson, while Juliet Macur of the New York Times noted the final five were lucky to make it out of a competitive field:
The team underwhelmed at the 2012 London Games, finishing fifth after entering the competition as one of the favorites. Mikulak said this year will not be the same, per ESPN.com's Melissa Isaacson:
"One hundred percent [different]. We've been doing international competitions for a large portion of our lives now. ... It is such a big-pressure situation, but the gymnastics we're doing is no different than the gymnastics you do when you're training. The skills are the same, the equipment is the same.
You just have to go and trust that you've put in the work in, the muscle memory to put on the show you need to in Rio.
"
The U.S. will have an experienced group in August, which should give it an advantage this time around.
The Americans will hope to use their past failings as motivation to win gold in Rio.
