Argentina vs. Chile
When these two sides met at the Copa America last year, it was Chile who came away the victors on penalties, following a goalless stalemate.
Indeed, the tournament's official Twitter feed revealed a remarkable stat regarding La Roja's record against Argentina:
While a 0-0 draw seems unlikely this time around (Argentina have scored 18 goals thus far in the competition, while Chile have notched 16), it's entirely possible there will be nothing to separate them after 90 minutes.
ESPN FC's Tom Marshall is eagerly awaiting the upcoming clash:
Not only will Sunday's match be a repeat of the 2015 final, it will also be a rematch from when the pair met in their opening group game this year.
Argentina deservedly won that match despite Lionel Messi's absence and now look even stronger with the talisman back and firing on all cylinders. His superb free-kick against the U.S. was a significant landmark, per the Copa America:
The 28-year-old not only has five goals at the tournament so far, but he's also been at his creative best, providing assists for Ezequiel Lavezzi and Gonzalo Higuain in their last match.
Per the Guardian's Tom Dart, Argentina manager Gerardo Martino said: "It makes me happy that Messi has surpassed the previous record of [Gabriel Batistuta], but knowing how he is, he is more happy for the team. It is very good that the best player in the world is also the leading scorer of the national team."
Per OptaJack, La Albiceleste have enjoyed goals spread throughout their team, though, as have La Roja:
As such, it won't simply be a case of Chile containing Messi or Argentina shutting down Alexis Sanchez, and because of that, it promises to be an even more thrilling encounter.
Fox Sports' Grant Wahl hailed Chile's ability to fashion opportunities despite Arturo Vidal's suspension for the match with Colombia:
The box-to-box midfielder will be free to play in the final and should be fresh after missing the last match, so La Roja have received a timely boost to their chances.
Football writer Rupert Fryer believes Chile boss Juan Antonio Pizzi deserves a lot of credit for his tactical approach to the semi-final:
A similarly astute tactical adaptation could go a long way toward deciding the match. So too will the players' mental approaches. Per beIN Sports, Pizzi believes his charges have the right attitude to attain success:
"This is a group of winners. The main virtue for these players is they are winners. Before a game or a tournament, they are convinced they are going to win. This conviction allows them to play how they play and have the confidence they have in games.
"
After reaching the 2014 FIFA World Cup final and the Copa final the following year and failing to win either, Argentina must overcome any mental hurdles they might face.
They also likely feel they have a point to prove—as does Messi, as major international success is the one thing missing from his considerable CV.
Sunday's matchup should make for a truly unmissable encounter.
