The key for Chile here in the semis is not to be overconfident following its rout of Mexico, which surprised many. The win itself was not shocking at all, but the final outcome may have been due to El Tricolor’s unraveling under the pressure rather than the Chileans simply dominating play. Colombia figures to be a better test for them defensively after beating Peru 4-2 on penalty kicks, although the team did give up four goals combined in its previous two games.
The Colombians finished second in Group A behind the United States despite beating the Americans 2-0 in the opener back on June 3. They topped Paraguay 2-1 in their next game before getting stunned 3-2 by Costa Rica to cost them first place in the group.
Things still worked out pretty well for them, though, as they were able to avoid a semifinal matchup with Argentina. The biggest disadvantage for them will be inexperience because they have not been to the semis since 2004 and fell to the Argentinians 5-4 on penalty kicks in the quarters last year.
Chile has the best goaltender in the tournament in Claudio Bravo, who surrendered just one goal in regulation play during last year’s knockout stage and allowed only Lionel Messi to score for Argentina in a 4-1 victory on penalty kicks for the 2015 Copa America title.
Bravo has been good in this year’s tourney but did not post a shutout until blanking Mexico in the quarters. He will need to pick up where he left off in that game. The Chileans' 13 goals scored over the last three games have come from just four players, with Eduardo Vargas (six) leading the way followed by Alexis Sanchez (three), Arturo Vidal (two) and Edson Puch (two).
Only tournament betting favorite Argentina can match Chile’s firepower, and a rematch of its 2-1 victory in the Group D opener along with last year’s title game would be a fitting way to end this year’s tournament on Sunday. Colombia should be able to keep it close, but Bravo will be the difference.
Chile vs. Colombia Prediction: 2-1 Chile
