Xherdan Shaqiri Makes Puma Joke After Ripped Shirts in Switzerland vs. France

Switzerland’s perishable shirts were arguably the most fascinating thing about the team’s 0-0 draw with France on Sunday at the UEFA European Championship clash. At least the side’s star man Xherdan Shaqiri was able to see the funny side, though.

“I hope Puma does not produce condoms,” the Stoke City man said, per Alan Smith of the Guardian, as four players in red saw their Puma jerseys torn during the contest in Lille, France.

In addition to the garments coming apart, the match also saw one of the Adidas balls burst following a challenge between Antoine Griezmann and Valon Behrami. The pitch at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy was far from plush as well, with players slipping frequently throughout the stalemate.

Oliver Holt of the Mail on Sunday offered his insight into the issues:

While none of the clashes that saw shirts ripped were particularly fierce, Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer chose not to criticise the manufacturer. “It can happen,” he said, per Smith. “It means it was a fight on pitch.”

Switzerland will be hoping their gear is much more durable in the latter stages of the tournament. A point against the hosts saw them book their place in the knockout stages. They’ll play the team that finishes second in Group C in Saint-Etienne, France, on Saturday.
