Pole-sitter John Hunter Nemechek finished in 12th after leading the first 53 laps of the race. Cautions were at a minimum halfway through the race, but the first one affected the leaderboard.

Byron took the lead on Lap 54, and the rookie phenom maintained a nearly five-second lead before the race's second caution, per NASCAR Trucks:

After taking the victory last week, Byron looked to be in good position to win yet another race, via Fox Sports 1:

As the race neared its halfway point, Byron maintained his comfortable lead. Despite the caution clock expiring for the second yellow flag of the race midway through, Byron did not give up his lead. Nemechek moved back to second place but failed to inch closer.

Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register documented Byron's lead with 62 laps to go:

The theme of the Camping World Truck Series this year has been to not always bet on the racer who holds the lead for the most laps. That strategy normally has not guaranteed a victory.

Byron had been on the better end of that in recent weeks, but this time he fell victim to a bad outing on pit road. The rookie fell to 11th place and was more than six seconds behind the lead. But on Lap 163, he stormed back to sixth place and was only two seconds behind.

Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick took the lead on Lap 150, per Fox Sports 1:

But the race halted on Lap 184. The red flag came out because of grease or oil on one of the corners of the track. Once the race resumed, Byron finally stormed back to the front of the pack with seven laps to go. With the lead growing to nearly a second, Byron coasted to take home another victory.

Byron's patience was on display in this race. Even though he fell behind to 11th, the savvy 18-year-old continued to show veteran instincts on the track.

He continues to climb up the points leaderboard in the Truck Series, and it should be only a matter of time before he's in the championship conversation.

Post-Race Reaction

Byron said it was vital to keep his calm after the complicated pit stop that dropped him 10 spots from the lead.

"We had a couple setbacks there. I stalled it on pit road and I had a few setbacks on some restarts, but we kept after it until that last restart. It's awesome," Byron said, per Chris Knight of NASCAR.com.

Through nine starts, this recent high school graduate is now in the conversation with the best racers in the truck series.

“I’m really proud of this whole team,” Byron said, per Logue. “It’s amazing what we’ve been able to do."

After starting 11th in the race, Custer had to storm back to finish second with the help of some yellow flags.

“I was driving as hard as I could,” Custer said, per Logue. “I tried to make it as hard as possible to have him get by me, but he definitely was a little bit better.”
