Copa America 2016: Group-Stage Results, Quarter-Final Predictions and Title Odds

Christopher SimpsonJun 14, 2016

Defending champions Chile and last year's runners-up Argentina secured their places in the quarter-finals of the 2016 Copa America on Tuesday, confirming the full lineup of the eight teams set to contest the knockout phase.

They will join the likes of Mexico, the United States, Colombia and Ecuador, but there will be no place for Brazil after they were dumped out of the competition by Peru, who finished top of Group B. Venezuela complete the quarter-final lineup, with Uruguay also suffering a shock early exit.

Here is confirmation of those final group-stage results, the latest title odds and predictions for the quarter-finals:

Argentina vs. Venezuela

Argentina well and truly laid down a marker for the Centenario in Group D as they won all three of their games, making them the first team to do so since 2007.

While comfortable wins against Panama and Bolivia were to be expected, to beat title-holders Chile in their first match, and without Lionel Messi, was particularly impressive.

As OptaJavier noted, their goalscoring exploits have contributed to their status as favourites to lift the trophy:

Messi is also returning to fitness, which bodes well for La Albiceleste. After scoring a hat-trick in just half an hour as a substitute against Panama, he played 45 minutes against Bolivia on Tuesday.

Though he did not find the scoresheet, he still provided a memorable highlight and a moment to forget for La Verde's Carlos Lampe, per Fox Sports' Grant Wahl:

Venezuela have also been quietly impressive throughout the tournament so far, picking up seven points in a group that also contained Uruguay and Mexico. While they scored just three goalsthe fewest of any side to qualify for the knockout phasethey also conceded only once, the same as Argentina.

SBI Soccer's Ives Galarcep praised their efforts after drawing with Mexico in their final group match:

Despite being serious underdogs against Argentina, La Vinotinto coach Rafael Dudamel believes they shouldn't be written off, per ESPN FC's Tom Marshall:

Indeed, they thoroughly earned their place in the match and if they can remain as resolute as they did in the group stage, Argentina may find it difficult to break them down.

Venezuela haven't faced an attacking force as strong as La Albiceleste's, though, so Argentina should have enough about them to advance to the quarter-finals.

Mexico vs. Chile

One of the standout fixtures of the quarter-finals will take place at the Levi's Stadium on Saturday when Mexico meet Chile.

El Tri topped their group after an unbeaten run, and they enjoyed a 3-1 win over Uruguay in their first outing.

La Roja left it until their final match to secure passage to the quarter-finals and needed at least a draw with Panama on Tuesday to proceed. Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez inspired them to a 4-2 victory with a brace each—the latter's being especially impressive, per AtTheBuzzer:

After the Arsenal star admitted to being fatigued following their defeat to Argentina in the first game, per Metro's Max Miller, his renewed form will come as a relief.

Fox Soccer's Stuart Holden and Aly Wagner ran the rule over their clash with Mexico and anticipate a hard-fought, entertaining contest:

So too does Marshall:

Indeed, Marshall further reported that the average attendance of El Tri's last five games in the U.S. has been over 67,000, so for all intents and purposes they will be enjoying home advantage.

There is little to separate the two sides, and the same may well be the case on the scoreboard even if there are plenty of goals.

Expect the match to be a thrilling contest and on this occasion, it could be Mexico who will come out on top.
