Spain looks to become the first nation to win three straight Euro titles, and four in tournament history, as they take on the Czech Republic in Group D action. It is a youthful squad that is saddled with the task of defending Spain's European crown, including eight players aged 25 or younger.
However, the squad owned strong odds to win Euro 2016 as the tournament got underway, trailing only Germany and host nation France at the sportsbooks.
La Roja largely outclassed the competition in Euro qualifying, surrendering just three total goals in 10 games en route to a first-place finish in their group. The side's only loss came early on against Slovakia, dropping a 2-1 decision back in September 2014 before going on an 8-0-0 run while outscoring opponents by a 17-0 margin.
Spain has been less than dominant in six matches since the end of qualifying, as they picked up wins over England, Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Korea before being shocked by Georgia, who handed the club a 1-0 loss in a pre-tournament friendly on home turf a week ago.
The Czech Republic has their work cut out for them, as they open the tournament against a Spanish side with just one loss in their past 15 matches at the European championships.
However, the Spaniards must be careful not to underestimate the Czechs, who finished atop their group table in Euro qualifying. The Czechs controlled their own destiny with a pair of victories over the Netherlands, denying the Dutch a birth in the European championships for the first time since 1984. But their 14 goals allowed during qualifying could be a cause for concern.
The squad has posted just one victory in their past five games, suffering a 3-1 road loss to Poland ahead of losses to Scotland and South Korea in recent friendlies in Prague.
The Czechs are also winless in four meetings with Spain, falling twice during Euro 2012 qualifying and recording a scoreless draw ahead of a 1-0 loss during 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying.
Spain vs. Czech Republic Prediction: 3-1 Spain
