Brock Turner, Former Stanford Swimmer, Banned for Life from USA Swimming

Adam WellsJun 10, 2016

Former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner has been banned from the United States swim team by the U.S. governing body for the sport.

Per Ray Sanchez of CNN.com, Turner's membership with USA Swimming has been inactive for more than 18 months, and he is ineligible to renew it.

"Brock Turner's membership with USA Swimming expired at the end of the calendar year 2014 and he was not a member at the time of his crime or since then," USA Swimming spokesman Scott Leightman said in Sanchez's report. "As a result, USA Swimming doesn't have any jurisdiction over Brock Turner."

The statement from USA Swimming, included in Sanchez's report, noted if Turner had been a member of the organization, he "would have been subject to the USA Swimming Code of Conduct" with a policy of "zero tolerance for sexual misconduct" that includes a permanent membership ban.

Per court documents filed at the Superior Court of California in Santa Clara County, California, Turner was arrested and charged with rape in January 2015.

According to Tracey Kaplan and Jacqueline Lee of the San Jose Mercury News, Turner was found guilty on three counts of sexual assault, including "assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated woman, sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object," in March.

Earlier this month, Turner was sentenced to just six months of jail time even though the prosecution was seeking a six-year sentence, per Ashley Fantz of CNN.com.

After being arrested in 2015, Turner withdrew from Stanford, and the university announced he would not be allowed to return.

The decision by USA Swimming bans Turner from being able to participate in the Olympics or even Olympic trials this summer and in any future events.
