Belmont Stakes 2016: Mobile Live Stream, Post Time and Race Schedule for Elmont
If Exaggerator wants to earn his second Triple Crown race of the year, he'll have to do it from an outside post.
The morning-line favorite drew a No. 11 on Wednesday, leaving only two horses (Brody's Cause and Creator) on his outside in Saturday's race. He was slotted in as a 9-5 favorite in the morning-line odds, slightly worse than his pre-draw projections but a strong number nonetheless.
Typically a hanger-back for the first half or so of the race—as he did at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes—Exaggerator's camp feels better than most would about his draw.
“I can’t see any horse that would cross over on him,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said, per CBS New York. “I’d like to establish position preferably without him getting a grain of sand in his face.”
One name that's noticeably absent from the field: Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. The formerly undefeated horse, which took his first loss to Exaggerator at Pimlico, was forced to withdraw from the Belmont due to an elevated white blood cell count. After defeating Exaggerator in four previous races before falling in the Preakness, Nyquist will be unable to make a comeback in what would have been a highly anticipated rubber match.

Instead, it's Exaggerator who comes into this race looking like the horse to beat. No other horse in the field carries odds better than 5-1.
“It’s very rare in this day and age for a horse to handle the Triple Crown so well,” trainer Keith Desormeaux said, per Ed McNamara of Newsday. “Exaggerator is very intelligent, very athletic, very sound and has the pedigree to get the distance. With all of his attributes, it doesn’t look like this third race will be a problem.”
The next-best odds in the race go to Stradivari, who will take off from the fifth post position. Stradivari has only four races in his entire career but has won two. He was the fourth-place finisher at the Preakness but is likely fresher than most of the remaining field. Trainer Todd Pletcher said he wants to keep Stradivari toward the front on the mile-and-a-half trek.

"I think he could potentially be the pacesetter," Pletcher said, per Dave Grening of Daily Racing Form. "If not, he's going to be forwardly placed. The key is if he'll just turn off a little bit and get into a comfortable rhythm. We feel like he'll keep galloping."
If recent results matter at all, we have to consider Cherry Wine a contender. Cherry Wine was the second-place runner at the Preakness. He's one of only two horses in history, Exaggerator being the other, to defeat Nyquist in a race.
“Cherry Wine will run on concrete, he'll run on mud, he'll run on gravel, it doesn't make any difference. It wasn't the mud that moved him up, he's a good horse. He's a good horse that'll run on anything," trainer Dale Romans said, per Ryan Martin of ChurchillDowns.com.
Overall, it will be hard to replicate the feeling of last year, when American Pharoah captured the nation's attention on the way to his Triple Crown run. Nyquist going for back-to-back likely would have resulted in a ratings bonanza for NBC. Instead, it's looking more like the network will have to settle for a field led by the horses that ended the year's Triple Crown hopes.
That probably won't lead to the same type of television ratings, but it could lead to a more exciting conclusion to the 2016 Triple Crown. If another horse takes down Exaggerator, where do we go in deciding horse of the year honors?
