Manchester United Transfer News: Michael Carrick Deal Expected, Latest Rumours
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is reportedly closing in on an Old Trafford extension after A-League outfit Perth Glory confirmed they've been beaten out of the hunt to sign the playmaker.
Glory chief executive Peter Filopoulos told FourFourTwo's Ben Somerford of the Australian club's failed attempt to make a move for the Red Devils veteran, who was seemingly set to become a free agent this summer:
"It was a long shot opportunity due to Richard Garcia’s relationship with Michael.
Perth was an option for Michael Carrick as he was going through what he was going to do in his career had he not landed a new signature with Manchester United.
We understand he’s now secured an extension with Manchester United so that’s off the table.
It certainly was an option to him and his family for lifestyle reasons.

Carrick played alongside Perth captain Richard Garcia during their time at West Ham United, and the A-League side's captain served as best man at the England midfielder's wedding—a fact that encouraged talk of a switch.
However, it now seems the 34-year-old will extend his stay with the Premier League giants, as Filopoulos intensified speculation of an extension at Old Trafford.
Questions may well be asked of how much Carrick can offer United in future given he turns 35 in July, but with so many young faces at the club, experienced Premier League players will be of great importance.
BBC Sport's Simon Stone previously reported it will be a one-year extension for Carrick:
The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder sits as the second-most experienced player currently at Old Trafford, with only club captain Wayne Rooney boasting more United appearances.
Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News last week provided quotes from the 10-year club veteran, who exuded a calm demeanour when quizzed on his immediate future:
Carrick has made a total of 421 appearances for the Red Devils to date, according to Transfermarkt, starting in 33 of his 42 outings for the club during the 2015-16 campaign.
Squawka broke down the player's Premier League contribution last season by the numbers:
New United manager Jose Mourinho will need figures like Carrick to establish some sense of familiarity among the players during a time of transition, just as the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes did in the past.
Although the veteran may not offer United much in terms of shelf life, he'll still bring some value to the table for the 2016-17 season, and Mourinho looks likely to benefit from having Carrick around for at least one term.
