Stanley Cup 2016: Updated Odds, Schedule for Penguins vs. Sharks Final

Timothy RappJun 5, 2016

Finally, the San Jose Sharks won a postseason game in overtime.

After the Sharks lost their first four games in extra time this postseason, Joonas Donskoi's wrist shot in overtime gave them a crucial Game 3 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lead the series 2-1.

That sets up an important Game 4 in San Jose on Monday night. Here's the full remaining schedule for the series:

The Penguins will come into Game 4 as the underdogs (+117), with the Sharks (-139) favored to even the series, according to Odds Shark.

And it's hard to imagine Game 4 not coming down to the wire. Pittsburgh scored the game-winning goal in Game 1 with just 2:33 remaining in the third period. Games 2 and 3 ended in overtime. Little has separated these teams in what has already been an epic Stanley Cup Final.

“It’s big,” Joe Thornton said of the win, per David Pollak of the New York Times. “We haven’t had the lead too much in this series. To win this one, it’s a huge confidence booster, and now we just need to continue it in Game 4.”

The one concern for the Sharks is that they seem to be constantly chasing the Penguins in this series. Despite playing much better in Game 3 than they've shown thus far, the Sharks still had to rally from behind twice in the game.

Pittsburgh's superior speed and unrelenting tenacity and ability to pester the Sharks and keep them out of a rhythm have been major factors to this point. But San Jose's home-ice advantage in Game 4 will also be palpable.

Sharks coach Pete DeBoer described the atmosphere in Game 3, per Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News:

"

It was electric. It was amazing to stand back there (behind the bench). You could tell that these people have been waiting a long time. I think the guys really wanted to play hard for them. I thought we were a little jittery early probably because of that. I thought once we settled in, they were a big help for us. It was a grind of a game out there. Our desperation level was as high as it could be.

"

San Jose's depth was also on full display in Game 3, which could play a major role going forward. This is a deeper Sharks team than in years past, with Joel Ward—who scored the game-tying goal in the third period—and Donskoi proof of the team's deep reservoir of talented players.

Another factor to consider with the Sharks?

They are a laid-back, confident bunch, as Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com noted:

"

The mood in the dressing room between the third period and overtime?

"We've always felt good; the group's always upbeat," Ward said. "Basically it was pretty chilled and relax. Just come out hard and play our game."

Some people might not believe that, but if you've been around this Sharks team long enough, you know it's what makes them tick. They're a goofy, relaxed group that loves playing hockey together. So despite facing a 3-0 series deficit with another overtime loss, they were Zen before the extra period.

"Calm, veteran group. You don't want to get too antsy," [Justin] Braun said of the dressing room before overtime. "You just got to go out there and play your game. You lean on your older, veteran guys. They led us tonight."

"

Pittsburgh is talented and has the best player in the game in Sidney Crosby, so the Sharks' mentality and demeanor may not ultimately matter. But given how close this series has been thus far, the Sharks seem primed to level things.

It would be fitting that a series decided by one goal in each matchup should even itself out in Game 4. It's been too close to call thus far. Game 4 will be pivotal in the series, as the Sharks look to claw their way back in the series, and the Penguins hope to capitalize on the opportunity to end the proceedings in Game 5 on their home ice.
