Thursday Recap
Russia took a surprise lead when Boris Koltsov picked out double-eight, but the Dutch pair quickly took up a commanding position by claiming three successive legs with double-10, double-16 and tops finishes.
Koltsov helped the Russians peg back their opponents after both Van Barneveld and Van Gerwen missed doubles, but the latter ruthlessly took advantage of an errant dart from Aleksandr Oreshkin, per Live Darts:
Oreshkin recovered in the next leg to reduce the deficit once again, but the Netherlands needed just one more leg to seal the victory and duly produced it.
With Anderson and Thornton comprising Scotland's team, few would have given New Zealand a realistic chance of progressing.
The Scots did indeed come out on top, but it required a remarkable comeback as Cody Harris stole the show for the Kiwis. He gave his side the lead with an incredible break of throw, per PDC Darts:
A maximum from Anderson and three missed darts from Warren Parry helped Scotland equalise, but Parry and Harris each took out double-16 to give New Zealand a 3-1 lead.
Their opponents' quality began to tell, though, as Anderson produced 124 and 95 checkouts to bring them level, and two more legs finished off the win.
Per Live Darts, Harris remained positive despite the defeat, while Anderson conceded Scotland were fortunate to come out on top:
Belgium's progression was far more straightforward.
Kim Huybrechts took out double-four and then 85 on the bull as Belgium raced to a 2-0 lead, and a 180 from Ronny helped them take the third leg.
Krzysztof Ratajski's double-10 finish earned Poland a brief respite, and he would later grab a maximum of his own. But there was little he could do to stop the Belgians from romping to victory, per Live Darts:
In the final match of the night, Simon Whitlock and Kyle Anderson proved too much for Max Hopp and Jyhan Artut despite the partisan crowd.
Meanwhile, Hungary, Norway, Denmark and the Philippines also progressed. On Friday, defending champions England will headline the action as they take on Spain.
