Bangalore clinched second spot for the playoffs, giving themselves two opportunities to seal a final berth, with a six-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils. However, they were forced to do so in spite of AB de Villiers' early exit in just the second over.
Kohli ends the league campaign as the IPL's top-scoring batsman, having hit almost one thousand runs to lead all others by some distance, impressing fans and pundits in every performance throughout a successful campaign. He added a further 54 runs off 45 balls on Sunday, after his regular South African batting partner left him to fend off the Daredevils offence.
Despite marking his card with another half-century, it was far from a classic performance from Kohli, as noted by Alt Cricket:
"Virat Kohli has been lucky...but as they say, the harder you work, the luckier you get!
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) May 22, 2016"
However, he was able to reach a significant milestone during his innings, as highlighted by Bangalore's official account:
Daredevils were the first to bat, and in spite of losing Rishabh Pant to a second over wicket, bounced back to move onto 41-1 after five overs.
Karun Nair looked in strong form but was caught by Kohli with 11 runs from 10 balls. Sanju Samson entered the fray with DD needing a strong partnership between him and Quinton de Kock and he duly responded over the next two overs, marking his time at the crease with 17 runs from 12 balls.
The wickets kept tumbling with three more batsmen ending their time at bat with a combined total of 11 runs before De Kock was dismissed with four overs left to play. The South African produced a wonderful performance with 62 runs to keep DD's scoreboard ticking over before eventually being caught out by Chris Jordan.

Delhi would end their innings 139-8, leaving the IPL's star batsman a reachable target.
Chris Gayle was once again dismissed early on after just four balls before Bangalore were shaken by the exit of De Villiers. The South Africa skipper was caught out by Jayant Yadav in the second over on just six runs, leaving RCB with an uphill task should they lose fellow big-hitter Kohli in the impending minutes.
Whilst those around him lost their composure in the knockout chase, Kohli continued to do what he knows best: making runs. Lokesh Rahul helped balance the tie with a 38-run contribution before his 10th over dismissal as Kohli ended the day with an unbeaten 54 alongside Stuart Binny, following Shane Watson's exit.
Broken Cricket noted the dominant figures Kohli has produced this term:
Victory—and qualification for the playoffs—looked unlikely at one stage, with Bangalore needing 36 runs with 35 bowls left to be faced. However, Delhi were unable to prevent their pursuit, with the batting duo keeping pace with the run's required rate before sealing victory with five balls left to face.
ESPNcricinfo statistician Bharath Seervi revealed the stat to please all Bangalore supporters:
In the day's earlier game, after being asked to bat first, Kolkata's Robin Uthappa burst out of the traps with four boundaries off the first seven balls to hit 33 runs in 3.3 overs. However, the India international's miscued effort saw him caught after mounting 25 runs off 17 balls.

No.3 Colin Munro and Gautam Gambhir were the next to leave the crease at the hands of Deepak Hooda as KKR stumbled to 57-3 in the eighth over. However, the resurrection started there, as Pandey and Pathan added a 87-run partnership in the next eight overs.
Both big-hitters began with a flourish before solidifying their position with bat in hand. Highlights for Pandey included hitting Karn Sharma for successive sixes during the early stages of his inning, while Pathan found a boundary off just his second ball.
Kolkata Chief Executive Officer Venky Mysore hailed his team's achievements at the end of the contest:
Bhuvneshwar Kumar separated the pair on the 16th over when Pandey struck a full toss ambitiously, only to see his executed shot fly into the hands of Kane Williamson at point. The 26-year-old ended his day at the crease with 48 runs from 30 balls. From there, SRH managed the flow of the contest as Pathan faced just nine of the final 24 deliveries.
Kolkata added 30 runs in the last five overs of the contest—losing three further wickets—to end their innings at 171-6, with Pathan unbeaten on 52.
India film actor and producer Shah Rukh Khan praised the KKR's performance, tipping them for the IPL title:
Shikhar Dhawan replied with a confident half-century for SRH, manipulating Sunil Narine and Jason Holder with some inspired workmanship with the bat. Unfortunately for the visitors, Dhawan was dismissed on 51 from 30 balls in the 12th over after powerfully sweeping Kuldeep Yadav's bowl into the hands of Colin Munro on the boundary.

Dhawan's dismissal at 86-1 was the downfall for SRH's match chances as they collapsed to 117-6 with four overs left to play, eventually ending the contest at 149-8 as KKR ran out winners by 22 runs.
The result was ultimately decided by Knight Riders' spin bowlers, who took advantage of the conditions to control their opponents. Narine chalked up the best figures for the hosts, recording 3-26, while Yadav and Shakib al Hasan picked up three wickets between them.
The spin trio bowled 33 dot balls in total to help secure KKR's spot in the next stage of the competition—with SRH's place already confirmed—spoiling the chances of defending champions Mumbai Indians.
